There is little to be added to such
a showing as this, coming from a
leading Irish and Catholic paper. Its
moral is, and no one can deny it, or
the facts that it states, that if the
« Irish were more independent of party, and showed more »rospect for
themselves by supporting good and
worthy candidates for office, nomatter by whom nominated, in prefer—
ence to political hacks ard profes“sionak politicians, they would command influence with both parties.
Tho most remarkable feature of
this attachment by the Irish to the
Democrats is that it is . not mutual.
‘The strength of the Democracy outside of themselves is in the Southerners, The Southern. Demeeracy,
however, greatly dislike ‘the Irish.
In the Coufederate Constitution — it
was provided that:no foreigner should
ever hold office, and no one was to
be allowed to vote unless @ resident
of the Confederacy twenty-one years.
We have already showa bow they

want an Irish Sergeant at Arms.
‘The recent‘ Demoefatie Conventions
in this State nominated Southerners
for Congress, ¢nd in San’ Pranciseo,
where Kuos, an Trishmaa, was nom
juated by the Wockingmen, who had
fused with them,. they refused. to
