3 i ; sot ED aia tasieinaiatinaeniciaatiiaininiicianitietstaminiasieeiasiarnees Fhe Piily granscnpt, “¥ NEVADA CITY. CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY, OLE, 21, 1869. One Great Reason For a CouNnTY Fatr.—In Nevada county many exper'. ments-have already been made by our people, looking to the development of new resources, and although many of these have been from time to time noted by the press, very many have not been brought before the public, and ~~ those which have, except a few leading industries, have not generally’ come to the knowledge of the public. For thstance the cultivation of silk has been thoroughly tried by Messrs. Maller and Isoard, and although the people have read of their success, those who have not seen the cocoons and silk produced, and learned how it is done by . personal examiaation, have -but @ faint idea of the progress made in this direction. It which has occupied so prominent a place in the minds of the people of the State, haw much more does it apply to ® number ef other iadustries which have only been tested by a few persons whose successes have only been incidentally mentioned, or known only toa few in the immediate vicinity. We know that Sorghum has been successfully cultivated in the county, that prane trees will flourish, that in the lower part of Bridgeport fig trees grow which measure twelve or fourteen iaches ‘in ___ Circumference, and produce as large and. _ luscious frait as can be found anywhere, but these facts are unnoticed by the majority, simply because they have not seen the fruits with their own eyes, and learned from those who have produced them. This knowledge may be brought directly to the people by means of'a County Fair. Here the fruits may be shown, and they will be closely ob‘served ,and the results carefully studied, while the printed accounts would only receive passing notices. As in the case of agricultaral and horticultural products, so with the various niuchinery ‘and processes used in mining. While printed descriptions are frequently unnoticed, if the machine described is found at work, it is carefully examined end all the various operations as well as theresults carefully noted by the observer. As u means of bringing the results of various experiments in agriculture and mining before the people of the county, and the State, no agency can be niore efficient than 2 County Fair. Let the people of Nevada county consider the matter well, and determine upon a Fair next year, asa means for bringing the advantages of the county before the public. # DatE PLuMs.—A correspondent of the Sacramento Union urges the planting,of the date palin tree in the warmer districts of the State. He says that le has three trees which have stood all the changes of the climate tor three “years and will soon be large. The trees bear from 100 to 300 pounds each of fruit in a season, and dates, it is well known, furnish a large part of the food of millions of people in Asia and Africa. ‘ The trees grow to be 60 feet high, have .@ beautiful’ tropical. appearance, and begin to bear when ten years old.— Plums of all varieties grow well in Nevada county, and we have no doubt dates could be raised here. Prunés * grow as large and bear as profusely here as anywhere in the world, and. ’ Buch fruitsas these, properly preserved, . * always finda ready market. ‘he climate is not too severe, and it has been ' #atisfactorily demonstrated that the foot hills may be made the most valua“ble fruit raising districts in the State. If some of our fruit raisers would procure date and prune trees, give them a trial make the result of their ex periments known, it would be the means o introducing the cultivation of thes trees extensively in the county, E. A. Davis, United States Surveyor General for Nevada; will take charge as assignee, of the effects of the First National Bank at Austin. ___ Brown's colussal statue of Lincoln i to be unveiled in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, N. ¥., this week. Looxina’ For New Eomes.—Alex_ ander McDonald, Eeq., President of the Miners’ Union’of Great Britan, an organization embracing some 60,000 men, says the Oakland 7ranscript, is now in San Francisco, having come to this coast for the ‘purpose of examiniog the opportunities it offers to immigrants, Mr. McDonald’s Association contemplate organizing an extensive system of emigration, conceiving that tion can be improved. Here is a chance for sone of eur immigration societies to do something practical, by co-operating with Mr: McDonald and the Association he represents, The men whom the Miners’ Union proposes to send abroad are all skilled workmen, and, in addition to their passage, will be provided by the society with a sinallsum of money to serve tlem on landing. They will form a most desirable class of. population, and we should like to see-a larger.part of them attracted to our shores. Masonic.—The following is a. cotaplete list of the officers elected and appointed at the recent session of the Grand Lodge held in San Francisco: _ Leonidas E. Pratt, Grand Master, San Francisco. Isaac 8. Titus, Deputy Grand Master, Placerville. . , John 8. Ward, Senior Grand Warden; Susanville. Richard Dale, Junior Grand Warden, Sacramento. James Laidley, Grand Treasurer, San Fraucisco. s Alexander G. Abell, Grand Secretury, . San-Franeisco. é “William H, Hill, Grand Chaplain, Sacramento, . James H. Hardy, Grand Orator, San Francisco. Lawrence C, Owen, Assistant Grand Secretary, San Francisco, Irving N. McGuire, Grand Marshal, Sebastopol, Sonoma County. _. * ; Benjamin Akerly, Grand Bible Bearer. Oakland. Join M. Keith, Grand Standard Bearer, Gilroy. . Samuel Prager, Grand Sword Bearer, Los Angeles. : ‘ William A. Holcomb, Senior Grand Deacon. San Francisco. Tvomas J. Organ, Junior Grand Deacon, El Dorado. Benjamin W. Barne&d of La Porte, and James D. Me Murry} town, Grand Stewards. Samuel D. Mayer. Grand O San Francisco. : William N. Anderson, Grand Pa suivant, San Rafael. James Oglesby, Grand Tyler, San Francisco. THe IxQutkers.—This isa name given to an association of Oakland whichmeets once a week to discuss matters of religious belief, Atheists, Protestants and Catholics meet and discuss with each other every quéstion upon which they differ, and, strange to relate, the discussions are conducted — without anger. At the last meeting Catholicism and Protestantism had—a—tilt on—the “Supreme Court of Conscience,” Zack Montgomery being the Catholic, and Professor Durant the Protestant. The next question is, “Do the teachings of the Bible correspond with the teachings of Nature?” These discussions appear to be largely attended, and great interestistaken. Certainly we are coming upon good times, when men of sentiments so antagonistic, can meet and give the reason for “the faith that is in them,” without’ losing temper. \ ‘The diamond fever has broken out in Australia, and companies are being formed for the special purpose of. diamond hunting.President Grant has authorized an absolute denial of the statement that Rothschild has tendered any loan to this government that a volcano in the Cameron range, on the main land of the island, is in active eruption. ee A’Yovernment surveying party of twelve men, under Nelson Buck, were, recently massacred by Indians near Fort McPherson. _ : Hon.
