Jas. H. Budd, Democratic nominee for Congressman from this District, spoke as follows during the course of hi’ remarks at the Theatre, in Nevada City, on Wednesday evening, Oct. 25tn, 1882: “Ex-Senator Dorsey, the present Secretary of the National Republican Committee, is an indicted felon who escaped conviction by the bribery of jurors. This is the man who was toasted by President Arthur as ‘the man who furnished the _ soap to carry Indiana.’ It is bad enough for us to know that money is used in elections and improper influences used to control vote, and that there are some places carried by the use of large sums of money; but when a man, elected as Vice President ot the United States, in a public banqueting hall, drinks to the health of a man who furnished the money that bought up or corrupted the votes of sovereign States, over which that man has been elected to preside, it is not only a disgrace to the Republican party, but to the Democratic party, to the people of the United States and to the whole world, Any man occupying the high position of President of this Repubiic, who thus publicly approves of the corruption. and purchase of the voters that he rules over, OUGHT TO BE SHOT. The speech abounded with illustrations, many of which he failed to make any application of; but there was no misunderstanding his sentiments in régard to assassination. While ‘condemning the ‘conclusion which he reached, we must give him credit for sound logic. By a simple transposition of sentences his statemeut is reduced into a perfect syllogism, which constitutes the basis of all argument, Such an arrangement of the sentences would read as follows, viz: lst. Any President who makes use of such au expression as President Arthur is alleged to have usedin his toast to Dorsey, of Star Route fame, ought to be shot. 2d. President Arthur made use of such language. 3d. Therefore (as an inevitable conclusion) President’ Arthur ought to be shot. Budd made use of the expressions contained in the first and second propositions, but wisely forebore to draw the conclusion, leaving that for his audience to fill .wp. From the reasoning, however, the conclusion is inevitab'e, It is a perfect syllogism, STONEMAN’S NOMINATION, The words of the Examiner two days after the San Jose Convention might be well emblazoned on che collar of the Democratic candidate for Governor. They should be ‘remembered by both Democrats and Republicans. Here is what the Ex. aminer said: When the final ballots were taken, and the railroad had to chouse which was ‘‘the least’ of two evils,” they unhesitatingly preferred General Stoneman, a known opponent though he was, to George Hearst. * * * They evidently argued thus: ‘‘Here is a man who is independent of us, We can not reach_him,** He defies us. If he is elected Governor he may become a power that will be dangerous to us. We had _ therefore better give our deciding bal’ots to a less dangerous opponent.” * * * They tee gave the votes they controlled to Stoueman and made him the nominee, Tue Vallejo Chronicle woyld like to see Mr. Estee and General Stoneman stump the State together anil give the people a chance to see t difference between the two Estee bright, magnetic, th clusive as only a can be. Itis safe to the Chronicle, that i: Wuata bad ‘set of negroes they are down in South Carolina, always bulldozing and terrorizing the peacerow and gota large number of blacks killed and'wounded. And now we learn that the poor Dems are afraid the colored people will rise and burn the town. They are a wicked lot of black sheep to be tormenting the poor wolves in that style! Tue Oakland Independent, a redhot Democratic paper, wants Jim Budd’s name taken down as a candidate for Congress and that of N, Greene Curtis substituted. What will the Independent think when it reads how Budd declared that President Arthur ‘‘ought to be shot.” other day at Lancaster they raised a the State are daily improving. In every place where Hon. M. My Estee has addréssed the people he has been received with the greatest enthusiasm, ‘His speeches are of such a character as to convince his hearers that he. will make ,one of the best Governors California ever had. The earnestness with which he handles the various subjects shows that he is master of the whole situation, and we sincerely hope that on Tuesday evening every voter in this city will go to the Theatré aud hear hin, In Sacramento he Was greeted with the largest audience ever congregated there, and the enthusiasm manifested was of a character to show that he uttered’ sentiments fully in accord with the masses, No one can yo away, after listening to him, withany other feeling than that of the highest esteem for them, and with the belief that he should be elected Governor. He is frank and honest in all his statements, and does not fear to give expression to “the faith that is within them.” On the other hand, his opponent, Gen, Stoneman, is basking—in—the sunshine of his orange-groves at Los Angeles, not having made one speech during the campaign; and it is said his managers will uot let him go out for fear of his making an ass of himself, as he did when receiving the nomination, What a picture is here presented. Esteve meeting the people throughout the State, and Stoneman caged in Los Angeles ES REL TATRA TOR BOT Gen. SToneMAN adtnits’ having branded soldiers (who tried to escape from h's command while in Arizona) with hot irons. If self-preservation is the'first law of nature, it. seems that it would be most natural thing in the world for a recruit to refuse to serve under such a commander ‘as Stoneman, who would surrender his men toa band of savages on the slightest provocation. The soldier who wouldn’t try toget away from his camp, brand or no brand, would surely take desperate chances. +—Sacramento Bee, The cold blooded nature of General Stoneman is strikingly illustrated in the savage barbirity he practiced on the poor, half-starved soldiers escaping from military serve. No civilized nation ov the globe treats its worst criminals in that way. SS CRG notin “Tr I’m a crank, why don’t. they (the Republicans) let me go to Con9? party This is what Gaspipe Sumner says in his speeches, to which the San Jose Mercury replies that it is an impossibility to disgrace the Democratic party, but that the State of California would be disgraced with Sumner in Congress. Tuer Democrats are doing a great ‘deal of crowing that they are sure to capture the German vote, We doubt very much if many respectable or intelligent Germans can _ be deceived into voting the Democratic ticket, and the majority of German fellow citizens must be classed as-intelligent and respectable, _ ‘Tye Bridgeport Union has an article headed. ‘Is Death Painful 7 This question can no*doubt. be answered by the Democratic party, It has been dying forthe past twenty years, The only thing that keeps it alive is an oceasional narcotic in the form of-an off-year political su cess, BULTEL AKRIV, NATIONAL EXCH4 SIANLEY A, EDD Proprietor DAY, Oct. 19, 1882, wards, Truckee, 3 ay, do ichardson, Golumbia-Hill, tp ke Spetz, San Fraucisco, A.
