BRANNAN, of San Francisco. @."MACLAY, of Banta Clara. W. W. CRANE; of Alameda. W. OLIVER, of diskiyon._ “= Wor Congress, First District—D. C. MCRUER. \GOerennexn’ Conversion (7)—Those of our readers who sre acquainted with Jim. Coffroth, ¢an appreciate the following good joke perpetrated on that individual by Frank’ Pixley, and which Henry Edgerton told 10 bis speech at Sacramento, un the evening of the 19th inet. We. eopy from the Union of the 20th: ogo “Now, Ihave got rather a goed story on our friend Coffroth. Guing up te Stéckton lust Saturday eveniog with Frank: Pixley— you-all Koow Frank is fanatical ; that’ ie, they say he is, but he is always fanatical on the side of liberty—at Beniem we overtook Uncle Jim Coffroth, aud Jim and Pixley and I weot up to Stockton on the same steamer. In the uight Coffreth was takén Third * —Joun BIDWELL. +, For Supervisor—Third District, _ WM. McDONALD, of Columbia Hill, _Fatse Paerense.—Candor and fairness id & characteristic which all men admire.— However repugnant to what-we deem just and right, we cannot but admire a bold and decided atand in favor of principle,“ The . : man who boldly asserts that the rebels are . right and that the independence of the’ South whould bé acknowledged; stands upon a platform sgainat which we may do battle. Iu the Chicago platform we find the oreéd of “(peace on any terms” clearly enunciated.— _ That document ie eminently fit to represent the tepets leid/by the ‘surrender party,” _ 80d is, we have no doubt, the policy intend—the Scuth aa. independent, od to-be pursued by the copperheads in case McClellan, should chance to be President — Wood say#, “Should he be eletted, he wl! be the creature of the party, and will carry Gat their policy.” ‘While we dispise the prin* Giples of that party,we must admit the candor with which they were enunciated by the Chicage Convention.’ Had that party placed itself and ite candidate squarely upon the platictin, we could have wet them in the contest upon principle. But that was not » the object of the copperhead party: Their only principles are included in the “loaves and fishes'’and the bearts of thé rebel leadete. The Convention knew full well: that _ ifthe true copper colors wae shown, overwhelming defeat awaited them. They could not come before the peuple of the United States asking support of their real princi ples. McClellan was chosen by them. He had worn a eword and a uniloris. He was _ placed apen the platform and wrote his.let+ ter of acceptance. Let eny man read that . letter end then tell, if possible, what principles the suthor baa? Is it not a mean, dishonest, uneoldierly attempt to hide his real position? Is it not evidently an attempt to ~ e@btain votes under false pretenses for the Chicago’ platform?’ ‘Bat after the letter was written, the copperheads were ready for the fight. They could go into the can vases without any settled principles. They —eould show the Chicago Platform to peace men. McClellan epaulettes to war men and his letter to men who were neither for War nor ‘peace. They could ask the eapport of the true rebel, of the war man. and the man who desired to’‘carry water on buth shoulders.” We are not surprised that many men of set» Hed principles, men of candor and honestyin beet; who have heretofore acted’ with copperheads, are disguated with the cowardLy desertion of all principle by that party, and left the chaotic combination of dishonesty, corruption and treasen. —With a wultiphcity of issues, there might "be some possibility of this party's wivning, but the true iaeue is eo plain that-a “man, though a fuol, need not err therein.” It ia—shall the war be prosecuted with vigor, or ahall it conse. Shall the rebellion. be crushed, or shall the nation be destroyed. ‘Fheee are the real The questiona and the only oties at isave. sbeople’ understand this, and all the attempts . of the copperheads and their candidates to make it appear otherwise cannot cloud the politionl contest. It muat be conceded that if it ie right te gontinwe the wor it: is demanded that every resource of the nation should be brought ta-the aid of the armies, aud that the rebellion must be struck where it is atrongest. Such warfare ae that of McUleWun on the Peninsula would exhaust the nation without weakening the rebellion, The people kiow and tully understand the ‘true issue. The incongruous professions of copperheads and the inconsistency of their candicate cannot hide the real issue. We muat catry-oo the War or ackoowledge On the. one hand we have glory, henor, prosperity and woity, on the other, disunian, diagrace aod Rational distraction _—-o Ar Suisun, lately, the residence of J. J. Pcko was entered and robbed of one hundred dollars in coinand a watch; and at ~ Benicia, the ante of C, By Houghton. was robbed of about four hundred dollars’ in ecrip. . with “severe iliness and sent for me at my staterooul. I-went te see him and found . bits taboring under a severe attack of what I suppused to be cholera morbus, Not being much of a doctor, and « little scared at Jim’s contortions, J thought Der. Pixley could serve him better'thau I could, and I cailed on bim, Dr. FPrauk and I went io again and found ‘the patient apparently in the agoni¢s of dissolution, looking very much as if-he was sbuut gone with the copperhead gripes. Hie extremities were very cold, and thinking ut firat it might be wind on the etoinach we gave_hiw sume pepperment aud water, but that —bad—nv-eflect: We thought tien perhaps be might tase been poisoned. As be bad tokeu three or four drinks at @ copperhead bar before he went ‘te bed, we thought it more than likely that he had some copperbead whisky in bim, amd 80 we gave him rome mustard and water as asort of antidote. That did’nt win. Asa sort of last resort, we took a large linen bandkerchwt and made wn immense big mustard poultice and cuvered it over bis abdomen und chest. He laid with it on about filteen minutes, and thea says be, “For God's suke, take it off, i¢ burns like blazes.”— . Pixley then took me one side, and says he,“Harry, lots keep it on there till Jim prom. igs to vote for vid Unele Abe.” Well: 4 thought it was a good ideas So we went back and told him-that the poultice could not come off till he gave us that promise. “But,” saye he, “that unconstitutional— that’s coeiciun!” > “Can't help it, Jim,” we replied, “these are dangerous times; the country is in dungér, and you must keep it on till you promise tu vote fur Old Abe.”— “Oh,” he suid, “do tnke it off, boys, it burns like the devil.” “Promise to vote for Old Abe, Jim, und off it comes.” Well, te laid under it for about fifteen minutes longer and then he did promise tu vote for Old Abe. I have learned frum this little icident that the pulitics of these fellows hes in their bellice, und not im their heads y that it consists of three princi lea—-whieky cocktaild, rymspunches and. late dipners—aud if you put a mustard poultice on them you can draw it out, clarity their heads, and then they will be sury to vote for Old Abe. Logan, waa approached by the ‘Surrender Party,” and effurte were made to induce bim to accept the nomination of the Chicago Convention. He had acted with the Democratic party. Haskin, a personal friend of Logan, and an ex-Member of Congress, wrote him a letter urging him to accept the nomination, He refused. He told them that “be did uot traio with that crowd ; that be woe » War Demvocrat—not ao peace sheok,” ‘and that be “never would consent to make peace upon any terme that did no! ‘embrace @ complete restoration of the Unien in all ite territorial integrity,” Tht’, what we eal! Jacksonian Democracy. Thoss are the kind of sp.rite that moulded the pol iey and principles around which Democrats rallied in the days of their gteat leaders. Were Jacksen alive toxday, he never would reorive’the suppart of the Chicago “peace sneaks” gor their Copperhead followers: PORTSMOUTH Squire, Sin Franciseo, is to be graded and itnproved at an expense of $2,950. = ae Arrivals at the National Exchange Hotel, BROAD STREKT......
