ti) ~¥ i. fe. ili Ny tw cir The NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. © Hon. 8. Garfield, of Washington Ter. coftt, sivory, will address the peopie of Grass Valley,....Friday, Oct. 23. A grand Union meeting and torchlight procession will take place at Grass . ; Valley on the 31st inst. Hon. C. B. Denio and other speakers will address the people. Let every Union man come ‘out. MorRE OF THE EaRTHQUAKE.—Several passengers who left San Francisco at 4 o’clock on Tuesday, arrived on the stage yesterday. They infofm us that the accounts published do not begin to give an idea of the amount of damage done in the city, or the consternation of the peoplé. The houses were generally vacated, and people frantic with terror rushed to the ‘streets. The plaza and other open places were crowded with panic strack inhabitants, and the wholesale houses on Front, Battery and Sansome: Streets were generally closed, al-anost all kinds of business being en' tirely suspended. A ‘letter from Chas. Marsh to-E. W. Brown, states, “an immense amount of damuge is done, particularly im the lower-part of the city on the made ground. Qn California street, between Sansome and Battery, it is settled about two feet, and on Front street the ground is cracked open. The machinery in many of the shops is displaced. Seventeen bodies are reported at the @ead house.” <a TERRIBLE EXPLoston.—Steve Ven-. ard, who has just returned from the end . of the railroad, gives us particulars of a ‘terrible explosion of powder in a wagon and tent belonging to the railroad company. The explosion was caused by a man striking a match on the wheel of the wagon. One thousand. kegs of powder were discharged with a terrific report and six men were killed, namely, Louis Rathrock, Alex. Pritchard and four Chinamen. One of the bodies was thrown 1000 feet, and of one of the parties only a hand was found. The accident occurred at Twelve Mile Canon. Tae Buue Tent De .ecation.—In our account of the demonstration on Tuesday night we unintentionally neglected to mention the Blue Tent delegation. -They came.in a wagon and carried lamps. A sickly looking individual represented Democracy’ on its last legs, while several mea labored hard to keep it up. In the rear of the wagon was a man who had a hide stretched over a box and practically il” lustrated the manner of tanning Democratic hides. The transparency promised two toone for Grant at Blue Tent. This part of the procession caused great amusement, and the boys were enthusiastically cheered as they passed through the streets. Tage Concert To-Nient.—A rich treat is in store for those who attend the Theatre this evening to hear the treat cantatrice and queen of song, Htadaime Parepa Rosa. Never since days of Jenny Lind, has a vocalist received such univeral praise and given such general satisfaction to her audiences throughout the United States as ' Pavepa Rosa. A number of seats have already been engaged, and as the Concert is for this evening only, we advise lovers of music not to neglect the favored opportunity. Ge and hear the songstress. i Tae EARTHQUAKE IN THIS CounTY. At Red Dog the shock was not severe ‘enough to be noticed by any one, but at You Bet, only a mile and a half distant, it was very severe and was felt by a number of persons. Some say it was accompanied by a roaring sound. At Chalk Blaff, only a short distance from You Bet, it was so severe that some of the people rushed from their houses. A Goop Rott.—The Grant Club in this city has 802 names on the roll. The roll in 1864 was 660. The old roll and the new one may be seen at the Club room, and every man who has not . % onee. od” shies .torted a we qede ; payment of the Wau. : TO-DAY, Sick Such is the experience of th Few ‘health. ‘To what does, the. 1a attribute his uncerthin a?
