It is gratifying to notice the ¢continued decrease in the expenses of our Government, and the corres_ ponding decrease in the taxes. During the fiscal year ending June 30th 1865, the amount of Internal Revenue collected in this county alone, was a little over $200,000. During the present fiscal year the amount collected from the same source, in this and Sierra county combined, is ; only a fraction over $20,000, and yet __ the twocounties are paying their full pro rata of Internal Revenue taxes. -Ingewordanes with the décrease of taxation, and the labore of assessing the same, and acting under the instructions of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue to reduce the num—ber of local offices. where practicable, the Assessor of this, the 4th District, has consolidated Placer county with Nevada and Sierra counties in one}. Division, under the supervision of 8. B. Davenport as Assistant Assessor, with his office at Nevada city. The change was opportune as the Republicans of Placer county had just elected their Assistant Assessor, . J. Ives Fitch, County Judge, which. -hecessitated his resignation of the former position. — Benevolent. V A.Goldsmith and G. v, Schmittburg were out yesterday collecting money for the poor of the city. They raised $51. This is the first collection made by the Society in three months. The. Society will be comPelled'to make collections monthly now that Winter is coming on. It is about time for others to volunteer to tise money for the poor, as the burden has always fallen upon four or five persons. Who will volunteer? Don't all speak at once. That Cow. . _ The double-headed cow. departed from this city yesterday. The Young were disappointed at the tight and voted the cow a bilk. They evidently had no taste for such a 2»logical exhibition. They expected to see the two heads where they beand the balance of the doublets in their several places, instead of being all in the rear in one mass *lconfusion. The cow has gone! The exhalations rising from decomposing vegetation, and the heavy dews and fogs, are very apt to generate these complaints. The wisest. pelicy is to protect the system by a course of Hdstetter’s Stomach Bitters at the commencoment of the fall’ Much suffering may thereby be avoided.
