The Great ‘Storm.
The Signal Officer in Washington
City has prepared, from -carefully
collected data, a report of the dampe
24th of August last, The: losses
~»« Which that fearful storm entailed are
almost beyond belief. -It is known
that during the 24th and 25th of August, in the neighborkood of the St.
‘Lawrence Gulf and the Atlantic
: shores of Nova Scotia, Gape Breton
ae and Newfoundland, 1,032 vessels, of
which 435 were small fishing vessels,
were lost. Ninety other. vessels were’
destroyed by the storm before reach———ing Nova Scotia, making 1,122 vessels destroyed within’ a few hours.
Two hundred and twenty-three lives
are known to have been lost, and
this number is swelled to nearly five
‘hundred by those cases in which the
entire crews were lost, To this the
» less of life on land in consequence
of the wrecking violence of the oyclone, would add at least one hundred. Nine hundred buildings were
_ injured or totally destroyed by the
storm, Gloueestér, Muss., as usual,
bears a large portion of this loss, and
the fishing interests are thereby erippled very seriously, ~Other towns}
suffered severely also.
