es a sess a4 { RANI AE” NR, EE LN IEEE TL EPR TE ET ANITA The Nevada Daily Transcript, “Published Daily, Mondays Excepted, WROWN @ CALKINS. L. 8. Calkins, Editor. ; f N. P. Brown, Business Manager. Neyada County Official Press. FRIDAY, OCT, 26, 1883. —————e Sratisttcians of London are a little surprised in a-review of their figures to find that the reported actual wealth of the United States exceeds that of the United Kingdom by nearly $10,000,000,000.. Taking into account houses, furniture, cattle, lands,” bullion, ete., the United States is $49,770,000,000, while the other Power hasin round numbers $10,000,000,000. There is, however, a smaller average of individual worth here, being but $995 to their $1,150 per capita. The per centage of remuneration to labor is much greater here, being seventy-two parts, while itis bat fifty-six in Great Britain, Ferns, of which several thousand speciméns-have beeu described, formeda very important part of the earth’s vegetation inearly geological ages, asis apparent from the remains brought to light in the coal fielis, They now grew all over the world, but especially in warm and moist chmates, In the Antilles they comprise about one-tenth of the vegetation; in Oceanica, one-fourth or onefifth; in St. ‘Helena, one-third; in Juan Fernandez,one-half,and in England one-thirty-fifth. Tue little one-story house in which the late inspired Joseph Smith dictated the Book of Mormon to his scribes, Harris and Cowdry, is still standing on the north bank of . the Susquehana River in the little Pennsylvania city of that name, ‘ It is, ~however, in such a dilapidated and rickety condition that it’ threatens to fall, THE money of Tonquin is made ot at lead and very bad lead at that. The coins are thin disks strung on twine, and for a gold or silver piece the traveler receivés more of them in exchange than he can carry away. A lady going shopping is followed by a coolie who carries her purse and groans under the load. France, Russia, Germany and Italy are all busily engaged in strengthening their navies, and England proposes not to be left behind in the contest for marit.me supremacy. vedio SUES Asthe winter months grow en apace the chances of Tilden securing the Presidential nomination diminsh. It is impossible to frighten the country with a corpse. Sitanu is always objectionable. For sale by all Druggisté and MAGENTA CONSOLIDATED. A New Company Begins Work on an Old Quartz Mine. The Union of yesterday sa:s : The Magenta Con. on Ophir Hill, Grass Valley, is one of the o dest locations in that district, the mine having been worked more or less for many years but in a ‘superficial manner. A shaft 365 feet deep was put down and two levelsrun. Theze were legal difficulties, and the property being sold it passed into new hands, The reorganized company built new hoisting and pumping machinery and on Wednesday steam was started, The new works are located over the old shaft, the building being 32 by 44 feet. The engine is a 10-inch cylinder, with 22-inch stroke, and will do both hoisting and pumping, as there will be but little water to handle. The boiler is 15 feet ia length and 40 inches in diameter. The shaft is 44 by 8 feet in the clear and is~ well timbered. The works are substantial in construction and conveniently arranged, Regular shifts will be put on to sink the shaft deeper, the intention being to put down the shaft to the 800-fect—level with as little delay as possible. The shaft carries the ledge with it, and between the 2d; and 3d levels a ledge known as the Mohawk intersects at nearly right angles, There is also another large ledge’ in the location running nearly parallel to the Magenta ledge, The existence of this ledge has been known a long time, and on Tuesday, in running a tunnel from the ravine below the hoisting works to draw off the surface water this ledge was encountered within twenty-five feet of the shaft, and found tobe four feet in thickness, of excellent quality, carrying galena and sulphurets and a showing in free gold. It is one of the best ledges that has been brought to light in the district in many a day. The visitors, of whom there were quite a number present at the starting of the works, made critical examination of this quartz as it was wheeled out to the dump, and all passed highly favorable opinions upon its appearance, believing it’would yield from $3) to $40 per load. . The mine is under the superintendency of James F, Paul, under whose direction the works have been built. He is one of the most experieneed miners in the District, and was foreman of the mine when the present shaft was suuk upon it, 2 The Beehive. Let me hear from you, Jams Means, 41 Lincoln st., Boston, Mass, 02-8w His Soul and His Silver. “Your asking how I came to use it, reminds me of the story of the Scetchman who on his death-bed, a:ter a life of. meanness, wanted to make things all right with the Lord by leaving seme of his money to the kirk,” “Will the Almighty pass me into Heaven if, I give 10,000 pounds to the kirk, d’ye think?” said he, “I can’t promise you thot, mon,” answered the minister, ‘‘but advise ye te.try the experiment,” ; Laughing heartily at the stery, Rey. F. E. Osborne, of No. 273 Ogden Avenue, Jersey City, pastor of the Frsi Baptist Church, West Hoboken continued: ‘That's what I did with Parkxr’s Tonic ; I tried the experiment. It more than met my expectations, and I am very glad to testify to its excellence. Itgoes atonce tothe root of all digestive and nervous derangements so common among men of my profession. For women and chronic invalids the Tonic isa perfectinvigorant, and is destined to supplant all other remedies forthis purpose. A single dose produces the geatle perspiration and sense of life which eradicates disease, It see.us torouse every organ into activity. I admire it, too, for its power to anto, nize tne hold of the liquor habit over inebriates.” This preparation, which has been known as PARKER’s Ginger Tonic, will hereafter be called sitaply Parker's Tonic, As unprincipled deafgrs are constantly deceiving their customers with inferior arcicles under the name of ginger ; and as ginger is really an unimportant flavo‘ing ingredient, we drop the misleading word. There will be no change, however, in the preparation itself, and all the bottlesin the hands of dealers, wrapped under the name of Parker's Ginger Tonic, contain the genuine medicine if the fac-similie signature of Hiscox & Co, is at the bottom of the outcide wrapper.
