LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Local Brevities. Rain fell ast yoor long before the
26th -of -Qctober. “ Yet last season
owasa dry one, It may be that it
will commence later this year, but.
make up for lost time before Spring.
We will venture to make that prophesy at all events. .°
An excursion trip over the line
of the Narrow Gauge Railroad as far
as completed, is now in order, and
we understand there is a party going
to make it some time this week,
The work of grading lower Broad
street has been about completed.
t will make a spleudid road -after
‘the Winter ‘rains ‘and travel have
settled if down.
The gtading on Sacramento street .
is alse progressing finely. When the
“two streets are done, they will make
things look in better shape than formerly.
Stamp shoes and dies are being
cast at the foundry for the Califor_ nia mine, which i is located up on Gaston Ridge, .
‘Attention is called to“the card of
J. M. Fulwéiller, of Auburn, who will:

*the Grags Valley road is still flour-:
ishing. It has the reputation of
turning out the best work in the
State, and is largely patronized for
‘that reason. When the railroad is
‘corapleted the proprietor will enlarge
his works and extend his busiuess
to other parts of this and =
€ounties.
The Star Base Ball Club, of this
city, will soon challenge the War
Eagles of San Juan for another
match game. It will be played here.
The boys here want to’ return the
hospitality extended to them while at
San Juan by the War Eagles and the’
citizens generally.
‘The news of the fire in. Virginia
City yesterday, caused a great deal’
f excitement here, and the stock re. port was anxiously waited for to see
‘what effect the fire would have on
them, The decline in prices was
nhotas great as many ‘anticipated.
Ophir went from 53 to 38% the first
elatter, Such is life, and “sieh’’ is
stock speculation. Time ’ will set
everything all right again.
Putnam, of the National Hotel at
San Juan, has a great many cares on
his mind. What with entertaining
base ball clubs and helping people to
‘wed, heis kept pretty busy. Yesterday he saw “Mr. Sneed through,.
and he expects two or three other
cases this week. Put is a good fellow, but he has teo much business
on his hands to be’happy.
Those tired men still linger.
When happiness and oblivion of
‘present cares can be purchased so
cheaply, we can not wonder that
they take advantage of the market.
It is better than Ophir. If the
whisky don’t give out it will be all
