be used as a means of producing the
required supplies of ity, The

The electricity in this case is conveyed by « wire not one-tenth of an inch

» . ‘James McClatchy, for twenty-six
j Ra oe proprietor of that pe‘The Bee says: He was a pioneer of
principal editor of the Sacraper daring the greater portion of the
time, died at Paraiso Springs, Monterey county, at 4 o'clock Thursday
afternoon, after four days’ illness,
‘49 and an ex-President of the Sacramento Association, He arrived
here 34 years ago, coming overland
from Mexico with a,party of sturdy
young men,“ and soon thereafter
haa continued to reside ever since—
covering & period of more than half
his lifetime, for he was only 59 years
old at the time of his death. He
was born in Belfast, Ireland, and
came of the study, strong-brained
Scotch-Irish stock which has furnished to the world so many men of mark
and worth, After coming tu California he corresponded for the New
York Tribune and his letters so pleased his old friend Greeley that he
authorized him to writeas often a-he chose at $5 per letter, His correspondence to the Tribune did much
‘to people Califoraia with an intelligent class of men and women, He
was connected with the Sacramento
Tranacript, reported the proceedings
of the firat Legislature for the Placer
Times, was subsequently connected
with the Miners’ Tribune and Californian, all earlyZpublications which
were not long lived. He first joined
the late B. B, Redding in the publication of the State Journal, but believing in the principles of the new Republican party he soon left the
State Journal, and with -ex-Se nator
Cornelius Cole started » Republican
paper, the Times. With the defeat
of Fremont died the newspaper venture, and Mr, McClatchy soon was
on the editorial staff of the Bee,
which started in 1857, We believe
he succeeded Joho R, Ridge aa chief
editor, # position which he has ever
since ably filled, resting only from
editorial work when he was elected
by the Republican party to be Sheriff of this county in 1863, Mr. MoClatchy has owned for several years
one-half the Bee property, except
that he some time since gave his son
arley a portion of his interest, He
was President of the Union Building
and Loan Association, in which he
held considerable stock, and was
also a stock holder and Director in
the Capital Gas Company. His life
was insured for $5,000 in the New
York Mutual Life Insurance Company, and he leaves a comfortable
home to his family, consisting of a
wife, two daughters and two sons,
