> cad COUNTY & OFTY OF FICIAL PRESS = 4 4 SUNDAY, OOT. 7, 1866. ‘Tue PekMANENCY AND CERTAINTY OF ‘MintnG.—With every year the business of mining becomes better understood, ‘and ‘a6 men learn by experiencénew and better processes for extracting gold, the certainty and permanency of this branch of indus‘try becomes more apparent. Twelye~or’ thirteen years ago the fact that.a man was, éngaged in prospetting for quartz was enough to ruin his credit for a bill of goods with dny merchant in this city, and éne of the first questions asked of merchants who went below for goods was in regard to the extent of their operations in quartz, and ‘on their extent depended the _ security required of them, . This state of } things grew out of the numerous failures in working quartz. Men émbarked ia the ‘business without experience and prosecuted it without the exercise of common sense. It was comparitively new and suc‘cess in it was looked upon pretty much as success at the gambling table, In. the. neighborhood of this’ city, in 1852-3, a snumber of shafts were sunk, and everybody engaged. in quartz mining failed.— it cenveniént to pass round this wi His-Sandwich Island letters, published Omme . the Sacramenio Union, have given him quite’ a reputation in this section. ~ GUERILLA BuRNT.—A_ guerilla leader, Dick Hempstead, was recently captured by sas, who, after trying him and finding him guilty of eleven, murders all of which he confessed, burnt him to death by a slow -fire Which totally consumed his body, “go that his ashes mingled with those of the fuel. ’ Dying Orr.—THE Tehama Observer of last week says that on the South Fork of Cottonwood the rabbitsare dying by thousands, to the delight of farmers; who complain that the rabbits are very destructive to grain and vegetables. >. Two men, while attempting to cross the river, just: above Niagara Falls, September 12th, had their boat struck by a squall, ‘forcing it. into the rapids and over the falls, Frres.—During September. there were nineteen fires in San Franviseo, destroying property to the value of $100,000. Kiniep.—Andrew J. Reed was killed at Arcata, Homboldt county, on the 14th, by These failures caused men to believe that falling from a load of oats under the wagon there wete no ledges above Grass Valley which would pay for working, and it was not until 1862-3 that these opinions began to give way on account of the accidental su@iscovery of several “promising quartz veins. The discovery of a number ‘since, and the introduction of improved machinery and cheap ,processes of working quartz, are, however, renfoying the old prejudices and causing quartz mining to be looked upon as a safe and profitable business. The steady improvement of the ledges as they are developed, and the—increased yield of ore in nearly all ledges, give good assurance that the business will be permanent. The same may be said of cement mining, which has grown up in the last three years. We have given sev. @¥al articles recently, in’ which we have ~ proved from returns of the incomes and the statistics of the county. Assessor, that miiiing is more profitable for the amount invested than any other business, Some time since the Bulletin published a table of yields and costs of working in forty niné mines of this State, in which the lowest cost of working was $2 ‘50 and the lowest yield $6.00 perton. ‘The highest.cost . was $67 25 and the highest yield $180 per ton, > The average cost is about $300 per ton. There are hundreds of ledges in this county which are from: six to thirty feet ‘wide; with quartz: which will pay. from 8 to 10 dollars per . ton—they will some day be profitably worked. ‘The Australian miners have made thirty per cent. on rock which yields $2 per ton, and there is.nd feason why rock cannot be worked as cheap in California, In the upper part of the county—Meadow Lake; Raréka and’ Washington Townships—mines can be worked by means of tunnels to a great depth. Wood and watet is abundant and there is no reason why quartz should nét be worked at-$1_per ton. If these estimates are correct, and no one who. will glance at the history of mining, and is familiar with tlic extent and magnitude of the “ledges of this county, will question them, it will be admitted that no business:can bemore safe than mining. For the evidences of permanency it-is only, necessary to reférto the Allison Ranch and Rocky Bar mines which have been work, . ed for years, and still yield large yearly returiis, ' -The largely increased value of property and the prosperity of our people in every part of.the county, the , rebuilding, of Nevada after the fire, at a time when business of all kinds was prostrated, and the present rapid improvement both here and at Grass Valley, are evidences of the wealth of our mines.’ The character of the homes built by our people, and the places of business . erected, demonstrate . that they have the greatest faith in'the permaneney of the mings. , 5.1 DEMOCRACY WILL BE RUINED.—-Fornéy has procured a list of all Pennsylvania soldiers reported as deserters: during the war, and proposes to have’ them gte There, arosixty, howsand, it laaalds 7 w do iT Price Snow Point Miss M Price wheels.. He leaves a family in Wisconsin. TE ship Sutril, from J apan, which arrived in San Francisco afew days ago, brought a young Japanese Prince, en route for Yale College, New Haven, where is going to receive his education. re RUMORED MAssacRE.—The Montana Democrat says there is a rumor that members of Walter Bray’s troupe had been killed by Indians, swhile on their way down the river. Gen, DruM,—Gen; RK. C. Drum; Assistant Adjutant General, is relieved from duty in the District of the Pacific; and or. t-Major,General Meade, at “Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ing the early part of the season promised a/large yield, will be a failure, owing to mildew. » THE receipts at the United States Revenue office during the month of Septem: ber.has. been $447,922 93. ORGANIZATION.—A meeting of thé Fire Comniissioners of San Francisco was held last Saturday, when the Board regularly organized by electing Benjamin 'H. Freetary, Fest APPEARANCE,—The Marysville Amateur Dramatic Astociation will play “All is not gold that glitters” atthe Marysville theatre on ‘Taesday évening, Oct. 9th. United States Govt ernment has appropriated $75,000 for this important object, which -will temove a great obstacle to the commercial progress of the Crescent City.
