es, &e Fest A ft, § King. NEVADA CITY, CAL. LOCAL AFFAIRS. Ih Trouble, —; W.0. Groves is erecting a brick building. The foundation was laid’ @ long time ago, but it has not been completed for the want of mechanics, He did succeed in getting a _ couple the other day,‘ but when he ‘put on another so as to hurry the work up in order to have the. builds ing completed before Winter set in, the twain became insulted and left him to do the work himself. There _ are too many improvements going on for mechanics to be very accom modating. Mr. Groves also had a pick et sharpener which some one has borrowed -and-—-not returned. wants it badly, and that is another source of trouble: Mr. Groves is an undertaker; there are but few deaths now-a-days, and that worries him considerably. Take it altegether he isa troubled. man, . ; Fordyce Dam. : The work on the dam being erected by the South Yuba Canal Co.‘at Fordyce valley, is progressing as rapidly as a large force of men can Pa ‘make it, We learn that it will be go . far completed, that by next Spring it willbe able to hold a body of water ‘thirty-eight feet deep, one mile wide and two miles long. The valley is so situated that it will catch the water falling.on the hills for wiles around. It will add greatly to the capacity of the company to furnish water to the mining companies adjacent to their ditches, and will be not only a souice of increased revenue to the, owners of the ditches, buat will afford increased ‘facilities for obtaining the Precious metal from many mines of the county. : on Greut Auction. J. 8. Holbrook advertises in today’s Taanscerpr that he will hold a grand auction at the residence of Mrs. Blum, at Temperance Hall, on Saturday morning next at 10 o'clock. A large lot of crockery, sufficient to run a first class hotel, will be sold, including bedsteuds. tables, chairs, benches, stoves, mirrors, clocks, car" pets, etc. Heisting Works Barned. The hoisting works und mill belonging to B. Ellison, on Selby Flat, were destroyed by fire on Yaturday night last, at about 11 o’clock. It is believed the fire was the work: of an incendiary, as there had been no fire in the building for several hours previous to the conflagration, It is not known to us what’ amount of damage was done, but the loss falls heayily on Mr, Ellison. Although times area little “off” in “\_. this city generally, there is always “tively times evenings at the National . Every evening, there assembles in the office and saloon of that institution, from fifty to seventy-five persons to ‘“‘wait for the stage.” It is a lively place, and a stranger would be impressed with the idea of a prosperous town, by “glancing in during the time. ~~ Rell of Honor The following is the Roll of Honor . in the Chalk Bluff school for the month ending September 29th, 1874: William Stebr, Patrick Hugsey, Willie King, Frankie Snell, Edward _ flussey, Emma June Skelton, Ella Wilkinson, Fannie Cahill; Theresa Cabill, Lizzie Longh, Katie King, Mary Riggs, Nellie Riggs Mamie — Same Notice to Sctttors. Hej Look out for the Locomotive, B. H. Miller, the great, Oipthing Merchant of Nevada county, gone to the:Bay for his Fall and Winter stock. Two locomotives anda long to Colfax, and. from thence prairie £chooners without number will bring ‘the goods to his edmmodious store in Odd Fellows’ Building in this city: The.new stock will be here in: a few days, and then look out for bargains at Miller’s one price store. ; 02 <-> _ Go to the National Hotel Shaving Palace for shaving, hair-cutting, and cm See a ae “Go to Nivens’ new gtand, corner.of Broad and Pine stréets for the best cigars in town: ‘gug27 A Life Doubly Assured, A resident of Rangor, Maine, writing to-C. N. Vegetation, during the summer, has “been wonderfully thick and rank, and, as it decays, an unusual amount of sickness may be expected;unless proper means are taken to prevent it. Fever and ague-and bilious remittents already prevail to an alarming extent, and as the fall advances and the malarious night fogs become heavier, the sick list is likely to increase both in the city and the country. Itis, therefore, only an act of common prudence to keep the vital foxces in full vigor, so that they may resist the unheslthy influences of the season. Reinforced by the tonic operation of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, the syatem, however weak and susceptible naturally, will in nine cases out of ten successfully combat every species of atihospheric’ poison by which epidemics are produced, During the month of September, October and November the difference in temperaaure between day and night is very great, and the chi. ling dewsand mists of the season are the prolific causes of indigestion, choleré-morbus, diarrh@a and dysentery. "Bearing this in mind, remember also that th. Bitters not only invigorate the stomach and brace the nerves, but act specifically upon the bowels and the liver, imparting, to those important organs regularity and tone. It is not reasonable to expect immunity from prevalent complaints if no precautionsare taken to escape them. Hostetter’s Bitters are st once pleasant to the taste and the most certain of all safeguards against febrile ailments. It (preserves health in the healthy, and renews it in the weak and ailing. .
