The Daily Transcript
“ NEVADA CITY, CAL.
Studying at home, he
Complaint is made by some papers of the practice of teachers reccommending pupils to study at home,
and there ought to be still farther
complaints by parents. A child who
stays in a school room six hours in a
day, has had enough school work
without forcing him to study during
hours of recreation. It is a fact
though, that the instances where
pupils hurt themselves with study,
either-at school or at home, are very
‘rare indeed. Not one teacher ina
hundred can arouse interest enough
‘among pupils to make them study
iralf the time during school hours, let .
alone hours owt of. school. Most}:
pupils will stand a good deal of; and Pine streets.
“‘cramming” without injury. We
think a majority of parents are not
troubled with an excessive zeal for
study on the part of their children.
Fresh Strawberries.
Felix Gillet continues to afford a
limited supply of fresh strawberries
to the market. We were yesterday
shown a box of the ‘Princess Dagmar,’’ and the ‘ELady’’ variety which
-werervéry large and of fine flavor.
‘These varieties bear twice a year regularly.» ‘They are an English plant.
Mr. Gillet has 30 varieties in all—
10 English,16 American,and 4 of his
-own; thatis, he planted the seed of
all the different varieties in his possession, ahd obtained four that he regarded as superior out of the lot. He
has named them the'‘GeneralGrant.’’
Governor Booth,’’ and the ‘Granger.” Judging from the first crop
he thinks they will excel any variety known. The berries ars of a large
size and superior flavor: The seeds
from which the ‘“‘Granger”’ sprung,
_ were planted in the Spring, the plants
transplanted in the Fall, and the
following Spring they bore a good
crop. Can any country beat that?
Gillet has plants for sale to Those:
desiring them.
