NEVADA CITY, CAL.
~. ZOCAL AFFAIRS.
Local Brevities.
The front of the Exchange Hotel, at
Grass Valley,, was brilliantly illu_ minated with gas jets on Thursday
evening last, on the occasion of the
Republican meeting. ia
The VFlume Company have closed
sfeontract with the Board of Trus-'
tees # Grass Valley, to supply that
town with water, for the sum of
$4,500 per year. * . =
A free train will be run-from this
city to Grass Valley on Monday evening next. The-Republicans: -proeS
pose to go down: from here in large
-<.pumbers, and assist in giving Hoa.
—-Hi-F. Page-a -grand-reception.The Dutch Flat Forum says: As
the water is turned out of the ditches at Little York, with a view to clean
and repair them, the only work being done in the mines at present is
the running. of powder drifts. , As
‘goon as the ditches are repaired, wa_ter willbe turned on at the Empire
miné. Theother claims will not regums washing until ufter-the-witter
tains set in. ce
The Liberty Hill mine, in Little
¥erk township, has béen run steadily during the season, but last week
—— ‘down for a short time.
‘The water supply had become insufficient to work it, and was turned
off to give them an opportunity ‘to
clean and repair the flumes and ditch~es. Tho Superintendent, not wishing to see agood paying claim lying
idle, has made arrangemeuts to obtain a supply of water from the Neyada branch of the South Yuba Canal, to keep the claim in active oper~~ Every voter should go and see

We are requested to state that
ticket No. ‘39, won the bracelets at
the North Bloomfield raffle.
The old ‘Tanner torches” are being put in order for the grand torchlight procession which — takes placeat Grass Valley next Monday . evening. There will be enough torches
for every Republican who desires to
» @arryone, We learn that the Grass
Valley Hayes and Wheeler Club have
their torches all.reedy, and will meet
the Nevada boys at the depot with
lighted torches, in a sufficient number to convince them that they are
wide awake for the campaign,
The Grass Valley Union cays: On
Thursday morning, about 10 o’clock,
a fire broke out in the residence of
James Glasson, situated on »Race
street, The Fire Department turned
out promptly, and soon there was
water pouring onto the burning
building, The house, however, was
badly damaged, and indeed the loss
of house and furniture is almost to. tal, amounting to something like
$2,500. We, understand that the. .
building was insured for $800. The
fire caught in the roof of the house,
and was caused by a defective flue,
The furniture was badly injured by
rough handling, although some of i#
is saved in @ condition that will allow its use, :
The Meeting at Grass Valley. ~
The Republican meeting which
took place at Gtass Valley, on Thursday evening last was an immense
Success, A specialtrain, containing
nine-cars, and every one of them uncomfortably crowded, left this city.
There must have been over six hundred persons on the cars, while a
hundred or two weré left behind for
wantof room. On arriving at Grass
Valléy, they all proceeded to the
Speaker’s stand, Opposite the Exchange Hotel, where were congregated about seven or eight hundred
Persona, making in all fourteen of .
fifteen hundred. A leading Democrat at that place informed as, that
in his opinion it'was the largest meet” .
ing he had seen at that place in many
years. The meeting was addressed
by Geo. F. Ba r,, Esq., and Hon,
W. C. Notton. The speakers were
enthusiastically received, and the
meeting did not break up till about
“II o'clock. The Republicans at
that place are wide awake, and will
give @ good account of themselves
on the 7th day of November.
