ALSO NILES, a ee eee For Justices of the Supreaie Comtty ...“> QO, 1. SHAFTER, ~~ ' $8. W. SANDERSON, . LORENZO SAWYER, JOHN CURREY, A. L. RHODES. «4. For Bupenthitéident of Pibite tnitruetion, JOHN SWETT, (PrIt ‘has ‘been the boast of Aimericans that their politicébinstitutions were superior to all otherg on earth, and more in eonsonance with liberty and the development of the human mind. It has been our pride to call_our land the: asyluor of the oppressed and hope of the world. We have w'l looked forward to the day® when the spirit of our institutions would be caught by the peoples of the earth and .kings and thrones would be known no longer. fe Do we believe in republican. institutions still? Are we satisfied that the institutions we have boasted of in the face ot foreign . power axe. the best for freemen to live under? If we believe still as we have professed to believe in times past, there should not be a laggard man in the whole Union in the defense of the Government. There can be no ahadow of adi ubt that the glorious in_ stitutions under which we as a nation have grown and proapéred and flourished us nev« er before a peoplo have done on the fave -/ the earth, are in danger vr destruction. If we look atthe animus of the leadersin re~ bellion we shall see the’spirit of intolerance and dictation, of aristocracy and insoleuce, Jincempatible with republican government. We know the Confederacy has been in con. ference with “England and France on the subject of establishing a foreign monarchia) protectorate over the rebellious States. The aristocracy of those States would not object to esjablishing a throne and seat thereon a Guelph or a Bonaparte. During the prog reas of this rebellion a monarchial taste has been exhibited by the Southern people on ‘several occasions, There is perbaps hot a man who does not timek that had the Union been undisturbed by inw-—.1 senyulsions the French would not have dared interie-.o4 with the gov. ernment of Mexico. Wi TW 2Tnion intact. and harmunious a throne with a nsburg? upon it would be iapussible, and had it ne. been thought by the French Emperor that the dissolution of the American Union was certain, he would not have been found attempting to force a detestable govorament upen the people of an American republic. All this scheme ot rebellidn coupled with the recognition of the” as belligerents by both England and France, and the inter« ference of the-latter power with Mexico, has for object the destruction of the Giovernment of the United States and democratic institutions, There ia no mistake about thia, All the evidences go to prove it: But for slavery the assistancé of England and Franee to the rebels would have been more open ahd leas mean and underhanded. They have attempted to cloak their designs, but the ears of the animal are plain enough tu be seen. Our free institutions are the hate of monarehists and must be put down if the abominable work can be done under any pretense possible. ee It1s imperative that every American should inculeate the spirit of Unity. There snould be no distracting isaues, among oureelves, for it may be the last straw that breaks the camel’s back. If we bat act well together our Republic will yet dominate the planet and the proudest of all titles will be that of Ameriean citizen. i tie THE San Jose In . dent Annoudees the opening and successful working of the Acid Works in that city. ue e ee SICKNESS.—The Placer Herald saVs"that considerable sickness prevaile among the miners alotiy the foothills. “* teat il * igi? es ‘Geonee Nv Swezy has resigned the po~ position of President of the Northera Dis. newal of active-operations.; strike & severe blow on a vital point. Rebel Gen. Forrest, witt 4,000 men made a raid on Rosecrans’ line of communication, between Nashvitle and Chattanooga. It was not unexpected. : The rebel atesmier Diationd with ‘s valuable cargo of saltpetze and liquors has been captured. . The rebels are disappointed in not injuring Rosecrans more in the late battle. The Riehmoad Examiner féare there is too miuéh truth in Rosecrans’ dispatches that he holds an impregnable pasition. Burnside is in communication with Rosecrans and holds all the passes into North Carolina. “His position is all that could be desired. Gen. Gillmore is getting his batteries ready for another storm of Greek Fire on Charles« ton. When everything is ready for efficient work the storm will break loose. Charleston is within eagy range. =” Gen. Weitzel has not been defeated by Dick Taylor as reported by the rebels. Gold 464. ar : We see the name of Rev. O.C. Wheeler:of Sacramento, mentioned favorably by several newspapers «a a probable candidate for Ciief Clerk of the next Assembly. Mr. Wheeler has all the qualifications in an” eminent de. gree, requisite far thet position, and we weult. ume to see him occupy it. He would rank among the best of clerks that have ever occupied the place, and assist materially the members of the House to an understandivug of the wants of many of the industrial inter ests of the State. ee renee CANALS IN Washoe.—The Virginia Union says the Humboldt Canal is rapidly pro«. gressing towards completion, and when fins ished will be seventy miles in length. Forty thiles of the work is now under contract and going ahead. The company-building it-have plenty of money, and all the necessary picks, plows, scaeps, shovela, chains, ete., on the ground, so that the contractors are not. delayed -for tools to work.
