SATURDAY MORNING, OCT.. 8th:

An Exctrinc. ConTest.—-A short but
deaperate cootest came off at ‘‘Blaze's™ Sa"
oon on Thursday jast, between two rattles
snakes which are kept caged and a large
rat. The tat was placed in the cage and
created for s time quite a hubub among
“their snakeships. Soon both reptiles began
to prepare for war. They coiled up, bead
and tail erect ready for the conflict. The
rat also prepared for the fight. The small.
‘er sunke ket up & continual rattling while
the larger one kept perfectly quiet waiting
an opportunity to strike. Both the snakra
appeared Hervods and excited After conpes eprring, the rat made a break for
the smaller enake and seized hun by the back
of the neck. The instant the rat made this
demonstration, quick -asthought the larger
snake struck the rat behind the shoulder
blade. The moment the blow; was struck
the ratexpired almost without a atrugele
So.s00n Was he killed, that after having his
month upon the simaller snake he did not
inflict a-scrateb. Those who saw the fight
speik of t as highly exciting and interesting.
The snakes have been in the cage tor newrly six months, and since their confinement
have eateo nothing.
Tie BALL.—A ball for the benefit of
Prof. Schinidtschnjeder, given ‘by his friends
at the Union hotel on Thursday, night wae
in every respect a success. Soon after 10
o'clock quite a large and plejsant party had
collected and the dancing commenced. The
musicians were Schmidtechnieder, with te
violin, Bueenius, upon the piano, and -Cur.
ter upon the base viol; the two latter volx
unteering their services. The music waa
most excellent, such ae is seldom heard in
this State. During the evening selections
from ‘‘Nerma” was performed ip a manner
that would have been creditable to the best
musicians. of the State. At the conclusion
of the dance the whole crowd remained ao
y ape that a pin might almost be beard ta
all while “sweet home” was * de We
have never belore seen n erowd eo quiet in
a ball room, The piece was performed with
eo wuch effect, that tears filled many an eye.
The-supper prepared by Eaton & Wibliamson, was excellent. At four o'clock a. m
the party broke up, and everybody went
home delighted ‘with st. It was decidedly,
one of the pleasantest parties of the season.

House py Fire.—On Thureday night the
Onk Tree Ranch House, about eight milés
from thie place, on the San Juan road, was
eatirely consumed by fire. The children
were playing with a candle, when a dress
hanging opon. the wall caught fire ead the
flames sprend so rapidly that the entire reom
wae tblaze in a few moments. A wagon
loaded with freight was standing near the
house and before the horses could be hurnvesod it was also destroyed. The was
formerly occupied ae a hotel by C. W.
Cornell. Mr. Odell, who occupied the house
gt the time of the fire, lost everything the
