SATURDAY MORNING, OCT.. 8th: ——= An Exctrinc. ConTest.—-A short but deaperate cootest came off at ‘‘Blaze's™ Sa" oon on Thursday jast, between two rattles snakes which are kept caged and a large rat. The tat was placed in the cage and created for s time quite a hubub among “their snakeships. Soon both reptiles began to prepare for war. They coiled up, bead and tail erect ready for the conflict. The rat also prepared for the fight. The small. ‘er sunke ket up & continual rattling while the larger one kept perfectly quiet waiting an opportunity to strike. Both the snakra appeared Hervods and excited After conpes eprring, the rat made a break for the smaller enake and seized hun by the back of the neck. The instant the rat made this demonstration, quick -asthought the larger snake struck the rat behind the shoulder blade. The moment the blow; was struck the ratexpired almost without a atrugele So.s00n Was he killed, that after having his month upon the simaller snake he did not inflict a-scrateb. Those who saw the fight speik of t as highly exciting and interesting. The snakes have been in the cage tor newrly six months, and since their confinement have eateo nothing. Tie BALL.—A ball for the benefit of Prof. Schinidtschnjeder, given ‘by his friends at the Union hotel on Thursday, night wae in every respect a success. Soon after 10 o'clock quite a large and plejsant party had collected and the dancing commenced. The musicians were Schmidtechnieder, with te violin, Bueenius, upon the piano, and -Cur. ter upon the base viol; the two latter volx unteering their services. The music waa most excellent, such ae is seldom heard in this State. During the evening selections from ‘‘Nerma” was performed ip a manner that would have been creditable to the best musicians. of the State. At the conclusion of the dance the whole crowd remained ao y ape that a pin might almost be beard ta all while “sweet home” was * de We have never belore seen n erowd eo quiet in a ball room, The piece was performed with eo wuch effect, that tears filled many an eye. The-supper prepared by Eaton & Wibliamson, was excellent. At four o'clock a. m the party broke up, and everybody went home delighted ‘with st. It was decidedly, one of the pleasantest parties of the season. Destrrvctrion oF Oak Tree Raycn House py Fire.—On Thureday night the Onk Tree Ranch House, about eight milés from thie place, on the San Juan road, was eatirely consumed by fire. The children were playing with a candle, when a dress hanging opon. the wall caught fire ead the flames sprend so rapidly that the entire reom wae tblaze in a few moments. A wagon loaded with freight was standing near the house and before the horses could be hurnvesod it was also destroyed. The was formerly occupied ae a hotel by C. W. Cornell. Mr. Odell, who occupied the house gt the time of the fire, lost everything the house contained. ee SPEAKING aT Rove & Reapy —Hons. A. A. Sargent and David Belden, nddreesed the people of Rough & Ready. on last’ Thurs day evening. A large number were out, ard ' the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. Sargent vand Belden are ‘towers of strength’ to the Union couse. These gentlemen have done good work for the cause. Mr. Sargent has been out mm other parte of the State, and will soon start for the northern evunties. We are also informed, that Judge Belden is going into Placer, Yuba and probably. Sacramento counties. Wherever these yeatlemen go they will do effective service in the guod cause. cae SPeakinc.—Col. James, Capt. Friebie and Hon. A.A Sargent, will address the citizens of Grase Valley thisevening. These gentlemen are good speakers, and are doing exovlieat svrviee in the campaign. Every man in Grass Valley showld hear them.
