SS a She Daily Sransevipt REVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. Thursday. Se Cae th, 1879. es October 9 The Farmers Not Unanimous. The ‘ dbbris. question, which jus -now is theall important one engag ing the attention of the two great in terests of this section of the Stdte has near y culminated in an oper. Warfare between tha farm2rsa of th valley an. the miners, aud itis mos. unfortunats that i. shoud be. so where ths interests anil wetfare-o, both indwssrivs-are mutual, and any rupture is certain—te—-earry—disaste.— ‘andruin to one or the other. Iwuld seem that the hasty action °o: certain parties in Marysviilz, pre tending to represent the whole people of our sister city and of the val. ley genera'ly, is not ouly ill-advise: and untime'y, but in direct oppos! tion to the wishas of a large class “© the citizensincluding mary of thy’ property owaers anl tax payers. ‘In placing an injunction upon the mines, tobs followed by long con tinued litigation, the parties in complaint are obliged to .urnishe.l bonds, and they a3k that the credit of th: city of Marysvi le shall ‘bz pledged to secure thase bouds (for in no other manner cau suits be ‘carried on) The thouzhtiul and responsib e men of Marysville are alarmed, as very naturally the’ may well be, for in this they fursos an additional burden of taxation, wholly inadequate to any gooithat will or is at all likely tv be derived. There cari doubt that, should the city of Marysville become security for the bonds, be no in the eveni of failure to win, an] the result will be as we have ‘stated. To say therefore that this action szainst the miners is the expression of a unavimity of sentiment on the part of the people of the valley, and vf Marysville more particularly, is not only inconsistent but absurd on its face. The conclusion that we are forced toarrive at, is that certain ambitious, bat not wholly — tible, legal gentlemen. from there and etsewhere haye a very large finger in the pie, and that these actions have been commenced, not in the interest of the long-suffering and unfortunate farmer who may happen to be the owner of a few acres of oor land bordering on the banks of the rivers said to be affectal, but-to enrich and gloriiy themselves at the expense of their clients. Let us hope that such is the ease, and that the better judgment of the people wi!l enable them to ses the mistake that has-been made and apply the remedy ere it is too late. = Deer Creek Mines. A crushing of ‘twenty tons from Rogers & Ragon’s New Constitution imine on Deer creek, opposite Worrell’s ranch, was made at the. Deadwaod mill this week. It paid about tthe same amount per ton as the last one, which is a few dollars less than the owners expected. A crushing is about to be taken to the same mill this week from Pare. & Kagon’s claim, situated on the opposite side of the creek and about a quarter of*a mile below. Both of these mines are in a district where no quartz mining to speak of has been done until this season, and they are paying well enough to demonstrate that extended developments.there are warranted by the richness and size of the various ledges which abound, ——K en > > Sp — Taxed te Death. While the people of Nevada coun; ty are growling at the weight of the tax imposed upon them, ‘we ‘refer them to the situation in Yuba’ éounty for consolation. The Supervisors there have just met and fixed: the tax for 1879-80 at $2.50 on the hundred dollars, or 60 cents highe than ours. By ‘the time that the ~—~«itizens of Marysville have also paid the outrageou ly high costs that wii be inflicted on them if they persist in fighting out their suit against the miners, they will find tiie load .go heavy that it will sink them jp bank. ruptcy both as a community and a: individuals. : iatformation Wanted, Will the Sacramento papers publish the vote of the State on the Chinese immigration question submitted on the third ultimo? Underneath Nevada City, running hither and thither in tions. are myraids of gald-bearing quartz veins, Among them is one that old residents say extends from near W. R, Coe’s shoe store, across the ravine in a easterly direction, and following nearly parallel with Water street reaches out towards the north bank of Deer creek half a mile beyond the eastern:limits .of town. The croppings have b:en found several times by housebuilders, It was seenin laying the foundation of the Episcopal church, again under a woodshed near the corner of Water and Nevada, streets, and also in digging adrain on th: former street near its head. From surface indications the ledge is belieyed to be between 12 and 20 inches thick, and rich in gold, although no one has ever yet sunk on it. W. T. Joyce isrunning a tunnel into the hill ia his “houselot which is located on the south side, of Water street, about midway of its length. A good-sized stringer) was deve'oped on first beginning work. The tunnel is now in about thirty feet, the top of it being some 20 feet blow theroal-bed. \ r)J ys ho,e to reach a ledge before going ten feet more. Should he fail in so doing, the the chances are good for striking a vein of water, which will in itself be almost as valuable as a gold mine. er Netter Comet ea Smuew at Moore's Flat. divers direcThe first snow of the season at Moore’s Flat fell during this week's storm. This week’s rain storm has served a double purpose. It laid the dust, making travel pleasant, and so thoroughly soaked the buildings and forests that with an ordinary amount of caution being exercised no fears need be apprehended of tire. Before
thé storm the whole country was as dry as an old toper in a temperance lodge, and a spark of fire falling almost anywhere was liable to do much injury if not immediately discovered and extinguished.
