Straxee Connucr.—On Sunday eves ning last, we -are informed that a man’ entered the Baptist Church of this city, and walking up to the pulpit, demanded the bible of the muister, stating that-he-was guing to preach. _He--was offered auuther Copy of the book, but Was still deterinined to’have none bit the one belonging to the pulpit. One of the gentlemen present went forward to put ‘the intruder out, when be started towards the door at a rapid Pace, shuuting at the top of his vuice as he lett the house, “Alpha and Omega !” alluding no duubt to. the beginuing and the end of his ministry. The ladies. of the congregation were very much frightened, by the behavior of the man, who was probably .in‘eane. ei MEADOW LakE.—We learn from W. 8. Head, who has recently returned from Meadow Luke, that the mining indications of that loculity are favorable. The town “is quite dall, but improvementsate being made in the processes for reducing rock and a number of mines are yielding gold.— The miners have given up the Stock Board and taken the pick and shovel, and good resaltsare already beginning to follow. ‘Che gold is “thar” and it only needs time and labor to get at it. In Town.—Cvlonel Hawkins, of Tenn., a Unionist of the Brownlow stamp, is now 00 @ visit to this city. He received eight wounds during the war, in defense of the Union, und asa Southern man indorses the policy of Congress. He touk ah active part in the late contest in Oregon. The Union soldiers are all sound, both North and South, aud wont be led in the rebel ranke by Andy Johnson. -Ricw Rock.—Parker and others struck a ledge a few days since near the mouth of Wood's ravine frum which they took about $600 in gold in a single day. The rock is white, aad the gold fine and in flakes. They have undoubtedly found a pocket such as have been several times foaud in the ledges in that locality. DESTROYED BY Fine.—We learn that Collins’ steam saw mill at Chalk Bluff, was destroyed by fire on Thureday night. The fire occurred about 12 o'clock, and the loss amounts to about $5,000. We are dnablée to learn the origin of the fire, but it is probable that it caught from the furnaces. Larce MiLt.—The Excelsior company . of Meadow Lake, are erecting a twenty stamp mill upon their ground, which they expect to get in-operatien in about ten days. COPPERJOHNSONS.—The copperjohneons of the Second Supervisor Dutrict, had a meeting at Grass Valley last evening, to nominate a candidate for Supervisor. The “call” was unsigned, but asked all who indorsed the Philadelphia address to come out. The election Will be next Wednesday. Grass Valléy, Little York and Rough & Ready Townships have the say in the election. bs PuBtic DocuMENTS.—We are indebted to Hon. Wan. Higby for a neatly pritited and ‘bound copy of Bancroft’s address upon the “Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln,” delivered before Congress, February 12th, 1866. We received also a copy of the AgTicultural Report lor 1864, which contains much valuable informrtion. \ Resicnep.—Miss M. E. Hubbard has resigned her position us teacher of Primary Schoo! No. .2, 0f this city. .Bhe ‘is one of the very best teachers in the county, and it is a misfortane for the schodl to lése her.— The Trustees have employed another teacher, and the school will be coutinued without interruption. " New Dktss.—The Stare & Stripes comes to us this week in an entirely new dress, and witt: of column added to each page of the pyper. The typographical appoof the paper is neat. It is pubod by Bogys aud edited by Beggs. Itis sl conducted and in politics 1s sound. ‘THe Pagave To-\1Gus.—The attention of inembers of the Light Guard, isgalled to the order for the parade this evening. It, be found in another colama.
