NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA.
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Great MBETING aT TRUCKEE.—On
Satarday'night a grand Union meeting
was held at Truckee. E. H. Gaylord
presided, and an immense crowd gathered from Truckee, Boca and the places
round about, to listen to thé” apeeches
of Hons. A: A. Sargent and T. B. Mc
Farland. Mr. Sargent. made the first
speech, and gave a thorough review of
the position of parties, which was lis
tened. to with close attention by, the
audience. Judge McFarland made an
mocracy without gloves, Both speakers
were attentively listened to and. fre—
quently cheered. During Judge MeFarland’s speech, one of the ‘unterrified’
attempted to interrupt the meeting, but
he was quickly called to ‘order bya
muscular Unionist. The meeting was
@ decided: success, and the loyal‘men of
Truckee and Boca predict good round
majorities for Grant and Colfax at both
places.
Tae Risine Star.—The Rising Star
quartz mine, located on Deer Creek a
short distance below town, is yielding
very rich quartz. We were shown
yesterday by A. H. Hagadorn a specimen which: measures: more than a foot
in diameter. It was streaked with pure,
bright and glistening gold. ‘The ledge
is about three feet in thickness, and the
richest ruck is of the character of the
specimen just mentioned. The second
grade of ore contains more sulphurets
but pays well. -The specimen was /
taken from the new incline, 260 feet
below the surface. The mine is. being
rapidly opened for extensive working,
and there is every indication that the
“Rising Star? will soon be in the ascendancy as a good paying mine.
» CHas. W. Foss.—This unfortunate
man, who was so seriously injuredby4
used’ in planking the streets upon him,
from-his-wagon; died-from the injuries
sustained, yesterday. It will be femoming off the timber from his wagon when
his foot slipped and he fell to the street,
He suffered intensoly after ths accident,
Deceased was a native of Maine, aged
31 years.
TBIAL oF GEORGE CARR.—The trial
of George Carr, charged with stealing
& gold watch trom John Garver, of
Hant’s Hill, took place inthe County
Court yesterday. The case was pros-:
ecuted by District Attorney Cross and
defended by Williams & Jobnson. The
case was vive the jury about 4
o’clotk, who returned in a short time
with a verdict of guilty of petit larceny.
The prisoner was ordered to appear tor
sentence on Saturday next.
Rowgrt TYLER. convicted of rape,
was ordered to appear for sentence yesterday morning, and the time for passing sentence was continued to Saturday
next.at 10 o'clock.
Fist ARRivA.L—J. & S. Rosenthal
received yesterday the first stock of Dry
Goods for the Fall campaign. The
goods are superior in quality to any
ever brought to this market, while . the
prices are so low that any one can well
afford to purchase them. Jacob Rosenthal desires the city and country ladies
to calland see the new stock as soon as
possible, as he is well prepared to give
them better bargains than was_before
known in this section of country. The
articles received are beautiful and of
every shade and colur. Don’t fail to
call and see the Dress and House Furnishing Goods before you purchase else.

gentleman opened his office on Broad
street he was taken ill, and until now
has been unable to attend to his’ practice. His health is now, however,. restored, and he may be found at ‘his
