State Fair at. Sacramento came out
his eagle eye took one of them in
1439 . and he straightway made up his. ter

came he had amassed considerable
coin and much information and felt
competent to embark on the’ perilous voyage. AlFhis brothérs, sishim to the depot, and each'gave him
some parting advice concerning the

reached the Capitol city at 10 A. M.

everywhere! The poér boy was too
frustrated to hardly know whichend
he stood on. He began wroaming

any dinner. “Pretty soon his head
began to ache. Then he got sick at
his stomach, Still he kept on walking, in hopes of meeting some familstomach, all ted out and at oddsends with excitement and fasting,
vent’ back on him.and he fainted
away on Sixth street. A policeman put him on his feet, He made
a bee-line for the depot, just in time
to reach the train and come home
again that same eventful Sunday afternéon. When he staggeted into
the room where his paternal ancestor sat reading the evening chapter
fromithe Good Book, the old gentleman looked over his specs dumbfounded at the appearance of one
whom he had not expected to see for
a week,
‘‘What, my son, back so soon!” he
ejaculated. 2
‘Yes, pa,” he gasped as he sank
down in the néarest chair, “and [’m
going to stay here “forever and ever,
Oh, dear, you don’t know how awful homesick I got. Its such a
mighty big town?”
And the yoong man has taken a!
solemn’ vow to never tear himself
away from home associations again.

Blair the ex-convict,’ who gaye
himself intb the sate keSping of the
Sheriff at_ Marysville last Saturday
>. because the public had spotted him
as one of the robbers of the Moore’s
Flat stage, was“brought to this city
in irons by Under . Sheriff Byrne
night before last and locked up in
the County Jail.On the way from
the depot tothe Jail he was taken
by Mr. Byrne afd Marshal Baldridge
into Malorttéy’s restaurant. for the
purpose of giting him something: to
eat. A late crowd of excited men
gathered irfront of the restaurant,
and in ortler to avoid a possibility of
trouble Mr. Byrne took the prisoner out through arear alley, along
1631 . ago, but had never been—outside of} Broad -and_Pinestreets -and—to_his

had been -déafe. The Marshal had.
meantime refnained in the restaurant
where the cfowd conld see him, and
thus threw them off their guard. AfWir was safely lodged in Jail

Louis Seibert, who saw the two

The prisoner claims that he can
prove an alibi without trouble when
the éxamination takes place. He
says that he has been spending some
time in this vicinity but went away
the Wednesday preceding the. outters, cousins and “aunts went with . rage. On the other hand,_Benjemin
Reed and several other parties” say
that they saw him here on the strects
and talked with him as late as Saturday evening. He is also reported
to have been in Grass Valley Friday.
Blair is a “‘sporting .man” and a
full-fledged one at that. Ale has
heretofore been in the State Prison
for stage robbing and kindred crimes.
Those whohave known him fora
long time and associated with him
more or léss say that he is not regarded as a very dangerong than in a

The man Smith arrested at Marysville several days since” was not the
notorious ‘‘Oregon” Smith as reported tohave been by the telegraph!
He was_released from custody, no
evidence having been. adduced: to
show that he was concerned: ih the
crime. The whereabouts , of ‘‘Oregon” who'is a long established pal of
Blair, is a mystery, it seems: It is
gether for the‘neighborhood of Marysville, and the sudden disappearance
of “Oregon” gives rise to suspicions
of foul play by Blair, for which, however, there seems to be but liftle if
any foundation eee
Blair will be regularly examined
as soon as *he presence of the necessary witness can be obtained.

all of Kearney & Co.’s antics, om the

now exists there. Those same newspapers have given to the Kearneyites of the State whatever power
