_ Since writing the above, the reporter has had a talk with Supervisor Perrin who -came over yesterday from Grass Valley. Mr. Perrin
says that Jones had some words
with another man,-not named, in
the brewery saloon about a debt,
when Hedge. spoke up andsaid to
Jones, ‘‘What do you want to make
such a fuss about that for ? You had
bettéi pay the twenty-five dollars
you owe me.” Jones then turned
ufacturers, and C. J. Littlefield, who
is agent for Getz Bros. & Co., importers, commissicn merchants and
dealers in provisions, @tc., at the
same city, left yesterday afternoon
for the upper country. They travel
together in a private conveyance.
Both ofthem are doing a thriving
business all through the mountains,
and they deserve their success.

There appears to bea general misapprehension about the game law in
reference to quail among sportsmen,
especially in the country, though
there are many in the city with
equally erroneous impressions.
Under the old law the close time for
quail expired on the 15th of September, but the last Legislature extended it to the 1st of October, until
which time it will be unlawful to kill

Testing Concentrators.
The long-standing thousand dollar
challenge of Adams & Carter that.
the Frue concentrator can do better
work than any other machine, is said
to have been accepted by the agents
of the Hendy and the Farwell concentrators, and it is announced that
the contest will take place within a
few days at the Empire mine in
Grass Valley district. The Frue
ranks high above all other concentrators in this district, being used
in about all of our quartz mines, and . mining inen here generally think it
will have an easy victory over its
competitors.
Pythian Uniform Rank. ;
The members of -Milo Lodge No.
48, K. P., expect shortly to perfect
the organization of a Uniform
Rank at this city. This rank bears
a similar relation to Pythianism that . .
the Knight Templar degree does to.
Masonry. There are already branches in must of the larger cities of the
coast, and they are increasing rapidly. It is expected that from forty
to fifty Nevada City Kuights will.
take the upward step as a starter,
nearly that many names being already on the application for a dis
pensation.

Ask My Husband.”
Dora, the: tatooed woman, had
great attraction for the hardy mioers who visited Robinson’s circus
when it was here, and the older the
hardy miners were-the longer they
were tempted to hang around her
part of the tent, One of her admirers at Oakland had an experience
that wasn’t very agreeable. He was
a hoary-headed old sinner: and after
commenting in an audible tone of
voice upon her personal charms, began talking to the girl, and usked
that he might be allowed to feel he:
skin, ‘'My husband is there”—
pointing to a tall, muscular-looking
man—“‘you had better ask his pernsission.” One glance at the said
husband was sufficient, and the aged
lothario slunk away amid the laughter of the audience. ;
