” Jefferson Davis, a short time ago,
gave expression to certain opinions;
in a speech made before the Southern Historical Society which have
_ been copied and commented upon
by the press all over the United
These opinions were to
the purport that the ‘‘Lost Cause”’
was not entirely lost; bat that-a-day
° would probably-come when the battle waged by the Copféderate States
would be foughtCover again. He
«finds himself without endorsement
in such utterances, even among his
own people. The Memphis Appeal,
alluding to them, makes.the subjoined comment:. There is ne man
in the South just at this moment of
less pelitical influence than Jefferson
Davis, because he is not in politics
and takes no part in public affairs.
The entire structare of politics,
under whose shadew he was raised,
promoted and defeated, has passed
. wway, leavimg scarcely a wreck bebind. He stands in the. political
South of 1873 like Marius among
. the rains of Carthage; but, unlike
Marius, be is nothunted down by
loodthirsty foes, nor is his head unsafe upon his shoulders because of a
price set uponit. Mr. Davisis within himself a living evidence of the
generosity of the Republic, whose
true principles of Government he,
in common with all of us in the
South, sought to perpetuate. In
any other country under the sun but
America, Mr. Davis assuredly would
have paid the penalty of our ‘‘failure’’ with his life. We cherish. the
same admirationfoer Mr. Davis which
we felt when, sight years ago, , we
‘indicated a readiness to hazard our
life-in defence of his assailed name,
