CHINAMEN ~ 1y_ Luck.—The Chinese miners are very numerous throughout the "State, and seem to be inspired with the samespirit of energy as the “Melican ‘man,” but are satisfied with much smaller wages. In the new mining dtstricts, the American “hardly strikes a pick before _ “John” is on hand with his pan and rocker, ready’ to work ‘or steal, as circiimstances require. In the older loéalities,.every deserted miners’ camp, every ravine which the American considers worked out, and every abandoned claim is taken “possession of by Chinamen, who, notwithstanding the “kicks and cuffs” they receive, keep closely behind the white man, seldom prospecting unopened ground, but following in the wake of the Yankee discoverer, and willing to take what he leaves behind or . unguarded in his sluices. These Chinamen frequently make rich strikes, but they seldom are »made known, and the money is carried out of the country without being of much benefit to it. ‘The Chinaman isa rogue by nature—smuggling, stealing, and swindling are occupations in which he shows greater ingenuity than his American brothers are capable ‘of. He ‘is seldom detected. A people satisfied with small gains, and always ready for anything that may turn up, are bound to succeed anywhere. A case recently occurred where Chinamen made an extraordinary haul. A Chinese company have been working over the bed rock in a. set of claims at Relief Hill, in this county. Last week they found a boulder weighing fortyfive pounds, from which they took thirtyfour pounds of pure gold. This haul netted them the neat little sum of $6,936, af the gold was sold for seventeen dollars per . ounce, MINING AT FALL CREEK.—A consider able amount of prospecting is being done on Fall Creek at present. ‘Ihe miners are running tunnels fur two different gravel channels which are known to cress that region. Oncof them has been opened and is known to be exceedingly rich. The other has never yet been tapped, but the miners are very confident that they will find good pay when it is reached. Maguire & King have exceedingly rich claims in the hill. The Wolverine Company run in a tunnel, last Spring, one hundred and fifty feet, but ‘they got so high up bn the channel that they could not work for water. They are now running a deeper tunnel, two hundred feet, and they think fifty feet will take them to the channel, from the point where they are now working.— Dillon & Co, are in with their tunnel two hundred and sixty feet, and expect to tap Many other companies are prospecting, sinking shafts or running tunnels, and all the miners predict that ‘the Fall Creek mines will be yielding largely before Winter. New Bui.prnes.—During the past month several new stores have been erected on Broad street. The building intended for the saddle and harness establishment: of W.G. Jenkins is nearly completed and will doon be occupied. J. E. Johnston, furniture dealer, has torn down the old frame adjoining his store, and will erect a fine store-room in its stead. A number of other improvements are being made.— Some six or eight buildings for private residences are also going up in this city. — E. W. Bigelow is building a fine house on the lot opposite the residence of J. N. Turner. E. F. Spence is also putting up a fine house, and a number of smaller ones are being built to rent. The Aponte of increased prosperity are seen on every hand throughout the entire town, THE CALIFORNIA Mixe.—The Eagle Mining Company, of which Mr. Pattee is agent, have their magnificent 110 horsepower engine all ready, and will soon get theirpump jn operation. These works are being erected upon the California mine. Three shifts a day are kept at work and an then quarts wil be taken ot.
