The chances are openly canvassed at
all their places of resort about town,
and Kepublicaus generally retire
from these diseussions with a very
ugcomfortable feeling of uneertainty. . It appears to be taken for grantej that Senator Mortoa will uot have
sufficieatly recovered to participate
without endangering a relapse that
would likely prove fatal. The loss
of bis vote will be felt; bat that is
one of the least of tbe misfortunes to
the Republicans that will accrue
from bis absence,

aud his disabled eondition endangers the entire superstructure. The
personal grievances of Spencer and
Patterson bave soured them, and
they bave a splendid opportunity of
returning the President a Roland for

that the present prostrated condition
of hie party south of the Mason and
Dixon line, will rather dispose Senator Conover to listen to overtures
that would insure a more favorable
outlook for No. 1's political fatare
than can be done by holding to his
party integrity.

Heuvy Debts,
According to the estimates recently made by statisticians, the
debts of the Government and people
in the United States, including Federal, State, county, city, corporation
and individual obligations, amount
to’ $1.000,000,000, the annual jateresto which js about 7 and a quarter
per ceat ,or about $725,000,000 This
principal is equivalent to $22 for
eich person ina population of 45,«
000,000, and the annual interest for
each is $18, The collection and payment of that interest are.among the
chief duties of the Government, and
they add vastly to its expense. Of
the debts, about one-fourth are
these of railroad and other corporations, ana nearly halfare individual
obligations, The collection and
payment of the Government debts
cost quite as much, directly and indirectly, as the interest money, and
add greatly to the burdens of. the
people. :
