-aminer has ieee for the “dead
past,”-and hence devotes considerable
spaceto the denunciation of the Pilgtim Fathers. -SpeakerRogers, at the
recent session of the Legislature of this
State, apologized for his origin, and expressed great sorrow that he was «de
scendant of New England parents, and
the Hzaminer seems determined to
prove'that the Honorable Speaker was
justified in hie apology. “But inthe denuneciation of these Buritans, the Zzamiver Seems to forget that some other
localities in the early settlement of the
' country were proscriptive,as well as the
Puritans. In this denunciation the Z.
aminer shows a contemptible sectional
spite that ought not to be tolerated in.
either section of the country, and after
misrepr'senting the first settlers of
New England, attempts to create a
prejudice against all New Englanders.
For egotism, and narrow sectional prejudice, no class, ancient or modern,.can
excel the Hzxaniiner and many of its
party. No virtue or merit can be seen
in any opponent, and-denunciation is
‘hurled at foreigners and native born»
when by so doing the ends of party can
be advanced, For example, witness the
recent slanders leveled at General Sher~~ wan-and-hisarmy, and-at the German:

REPRESENTATION IN. CONGRESS.—
The House of Representatives, which
‘will be organized in a year, will consist
of 800 members, an increase of 67. This
““fmcrease will enable the Eastern and
Middle States, which would have lost:
in representation, to retain the same
number, and largely increase the representation of the West. Estimating the
population of the country at 40,000,000,
there will be one Representative to be
chosen for every 133,383 inhabitants,
and California will gain a Representative. Ifthe first estimate of population was correct, namely 600,000, the
fractional part would probably give a
gain of two Representatives. We shall .
have without doubt.a representation of
four. As the State cannot be redistricted
before the next election, the extra Rep
Tesentative must. be chosen at large.
Tuw Stare Fatr.—The State Fair
appears to be ‘a decided success. The
attendanés on Wednesday was the
largest ever known. General Sherman
visited the grounds and Pavilion, and
at the latter place, in the evening, Congtesaman Sargent delivered the Annual
Address, in‘which he discussed the industrial condition of the State at considerable length. The speech is given
dn fallin Thursday's Union. The: rotting race: between Regulator, Shoo Fly
and Venture, best three in five, was
closely’ contested, and excellent time
was made, the contest resulting in favor of Regulater. The best time was

The Literary Society.
The evenings are now getting long,
and it will soon be time for the reorganization of the Literary Society. Last
season the Society meetings were invariably crowded, and the exercises were

Committed to Jail.
John Dempsey, who was charged with
stealing a box of goods from a freight
wagon in Grass Valley, has been committed to jail to await examination by
the next Grand Jury, on the charge of
grand larceny.
Will Commence Work.
Organ & Dunpicliff, contractors for
repairing the suspension bridge, will

next.
ARTIFICIAL Icz.—The Grass Valley
Union says: A company is about being

of the New Orleans Company in

the town is at present supplied, the article is a very costly luxury. The
stock of the new’company will be taken
by three or four of our citizens who .
are able to carry out such an enterprise.
Justice Court.—The Grass Valley
Justices seem to be doing a brisk business. The Union says: Justice Funston was all day yesterday examining
Witnesses in the Jate woman’s fight
case. Mary Keenan is accused of assault with intent to murder Lotta
Morton, an account of which we gave
the other day, and that was the matter Justice Funston was investigating
yesterday. In Justice Payziter’s Court,
the charge of mayhem against James
Trent, preferred by Renben Thomas,
will be investigated. The alleged mayhem consists in the biting off of an
ear.
NEVER did the question of neutrality .
assume a more remarkable shape than
in this war. England is the workshop
of France, Belgium is her granary. No
wonder that this has produced a strong
remonstrance from Prussia, who properly says that the question is above the .
refinements of crown lawyers, and belongs to the field of diplomacy. But
the ware of the last ten years have
shown the necessity of so altering the
laws of neutrality that the world shall
not be able to work unitedly for one
side only in aquarrel, Not the least
remarkable aspect of this question is,
that the side for which Engjand and
Belyium are,thus earnestly working is
the side they oppose.

PRECISION. OF THE GERMAN Fire
in BATILE.—The correspondent of a
Western journal, who was an eye witness of the battle of Weissenburg, referring to ‘the deliberation of the Gerprecision—the coolness, as if on parade,
with which they fire: “One colonel
tells me he lost his captains, lieutenants,
and four-fifths of his men in five minutes of time. The precision of the German aim did awful execution, They
would hold their fire till the most effective moment, and then blaize away
with such decision as well as precision,
that itis a wonder that a single man

opium. For this the grower obtained
prices ranging from $8 to $10 a pound,
from druggists and physicians in New
England. The opium furnished 9.25
per cent. of morphine. It is stated that
Professor Proctor thinks, with greater
care in obtaining the pure juice of the
capsules, the opium might be made to
yield ten per cent. of morphia. The
proportion of this alkaloid which the
best Turkey opium is capable of affording, varies from nime to fourteen per
cent.
NAPOLEON AS A PRISONER.—A correspondent writes that the Emperor, at
Wilhelmshohe enjoys entire freedom of
action, and walks or rides as he pleases.
His chief companions are the Prince of
Moskowa end Prince Murat. He disregards the stare of curieus people
whom he encounters outside the gates.
It is said he looks thirty years older
than in 1865, when the writer saw him.
He is now bloated, bilious and yellow ;
eyes fuint, tired and expressionless ; .
movements slow, awkward and mechanical, and his face absolutely devoid of expression. Another describes
his appearance in ene word. He retires Jate and rises early. His chamber .
windows. .are lighthed long after midnight, and at half past four the Emperor is seen walking in his garden. He

MODIFICATION oF CONVEYANCES.—
Congress has passed a law which says
that “A. B. conveys and warrants to C.
D.” a tract of land, shall convey the
fee simple, and shall assert that the
grantor has a perfect title and will
warrant the title so passed. It also
says that it shall be sufficent for a
mortgage to say that “A B. mortgages
to C. D.,” without going through the
old form of deeding the Jand and then
in case of payment of the money secured. This would save an immense
expense in recording.
night last, says the Grass Valley Union,
a shop keeper on Mill street, about
closing wp, turned down a Kerosene
lamp which was used in the shop. An
explosion occurred, the lamp was blown
to pieces, and a fire came very near being the result. There were several
persons close by when the accident occurred, and their efforts saved a fire
alarm. Kerosene seems to be getting
very dangerous.
