The Democracy and their allies, the soreheads, have entirely aban-. doned the hope of carrying. California for Greeley and Brown. There is no position im'life to which is attached more responsibility. No position where the work of a single individual will affect the weal or woe of so many for time and etertion to Grant’s administration. In . nity. other States the same coarse is pur_gued, and the object is to tie the hands of the Administration, and accomplish indirectly what cannot be done by an attack upon Grant and Wilson, If thése tactics of the enemy are successful, California can hope for little benefit in the next Congress. ° With-a delegation divided upon all issner, and which cannot act in harmony, its influence will be destroyed, and the State will fail to secure that attention to its wants to which it is entitled—a . delegation in the House in opposition to the Administion. will. have little influence for good, The same issues are "involved in the Congressional as in the Presidential contest, and how Republicans, who indorse the Revenue reforms and finaneial policy can, vote for Congressional candidates who denounce and oppose these things in the Administration, we cannot understand. Itis most essential that the House of Representatives, in which originates all measures concerning the Revenue, shoul be in harmony with the Administration upon questions of finance, and yet this is the very pvint of attack by the opponents of Grant and Wilson in this State, ~~ This pretended anti-subsidy scare is merely a sham taken up to hide the real intent of the party. They have alternately used the nigger and Chinaman for the same purpose, but Tt will be noticed that the Southern and the San Francisco District, where the probabilities are thought to be in favor of a Democratic victory this war is not made by the opposition, the Union taking no stock in that In San Francisto the Republican Central Committee asked the Bulletin to name a candidate, as they were ready to select amy good Republican,; bat that concern refused. Now the chances of Clayton, who is a pledged anti-subsidy man aré good, and the Bulletin to defeat him, urges its little fraction of a committee of 100, numbering. some 30, to nominate an independent candidate, In the Second and in Coughlan’s District, the fight is different. In these Districts a Republican majority was certain, and therefore something desperate must be done, hence we find -the anti-subsidy issue made against the Republican candidates. Now both Republicans in these Districts are solemnly pledged in the National and State platforms against granting lands to any monopoly and against Is there any more solern guarantee for Luttrell and Coggins? We say nothing outside of their platform, while the former has shown that he has no respect for platforms by his advocacy of bills, the poliey of which he was solemnly pledged against to his constituents. Coggins is shown to be entirely unfit for the management of any business, A max without interest ‘in tho District, aud who if elected would be in ho way responsible to his constitu. Executive officers may become corcupt and defeat the will of the people, but their term is short and the people can prevent a repetition by a change of administration. But who shall undo the work. of teachers,.who shall remedy the defects of early culture, who remove the stain of first evil impression? The teachers.of; this country are moulding the future destiny of: the republic. Notwithstanding the insignificance attached to their mission teachers are wielding an influente more important than all other: professions comb‘ned. For it-is. from the results of their work that suecess in any profession or occupation is.attained. Eminent Statesmen, divines, jurists, orators and scientists all owe their mental snperiority to the careful mental training of their early What reward greater than the consciousness of having aroused and stimulated the ambition of a pupil, and by continued mental. drill to have prepared him to occupy not only the most useful but the most ex~ . alted position in society: The work _of a teacher with a pupil is not fully done when he has perfected him in the curriculum of the institution over which he presides, whether it be the common school or the university, but he must at the same time have developed thought, kindled noble aspirations, created a love so the pupil will continue study after he is removed from the care of his teacher, All that the best institutions of learning can-do is to prepare their students to acquire knowledge after leaving achool. To discipline the mind, to.arouse the energies, to develop character’ and to fix sound moral principles in the maind of his pupils, is of far greater importance in the work of the teacher than simply acquainting him with the subjects contained in the text books. He is the best instructor, who, as time advances, can see his former pupils bravely fighting the battles of life and meeting with success in every encounter. He is the best teacher whose pupils become energetic, self-reliant moral menand women. To discipline the miad, to develop their character, to prepare them for useful members of society, is the work teachers have to do with their pupils. What work more important or attended with greater responsibility, W. School Apportionment. Tt has been asserted by the County Superintendent that the coming quarterly county apportionment would be about two dollars or two and a half per census child, but he has since learned that. but little money has been collected from property taxes, and as a resnit the apportionment will be about half less. He further announces that all conundrums of this sort he will hereafter give up without atrial, It is in determine with any acct apportionment will be. ‘borers-at the Mare Island Navy Yard ‘State. “Phe Sacramento Union and ef malice and revenge. He engaged in the business in Oakland about seven years ago. He was born in Ireland, but emigrated to the United States at an early age. He leaves a widow and four_children—te mourn his loss. He has for years taken a part in political affairs, and the causes that created a few bitter enemies also drew to him a circle of warm and true friends, and now that death has removed him from the community, all will concede that his many excellent qualities as a man eutitled him to esteem and respect."’ Dunne the few weeks that Mr. Greeley was in Congress he made himself the laughing stock of his fellow members, and demonstrated to the satisfaction of every one, except himself, that as a Congressman he was # ludicrous failure. Amonc the many remarkable sayings.of Horace Greeley that are now floating obout, the following is prophetic: ~ If the Democratic paity alled upon to decide between Grant @ myself, I know that their regard for what they call principle would mow Moaday 4 Pe ah dies: hine-tenths “of thet to’ ‘vote againsd-me.» arttaell yet . f ; Journal and the friead of Republican damnable infamy of the Sacramento ‘Railroad Organ.’ ome malicious scoundrel, having obtained his idea from the infamous Sacramento ‘Union, has put in circa lation the charge that the Franscrirr is @ Ceptral Pacific Railroad organ, and a few persons who always -believe everythitig’ they hear, actdally think that such is the case. There are some-people who always want a denial for every: charge, whether it originates froma diseased and corrupted braimor not.
