Seep ne to be defeated. ohe Daily Transcript. " WEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. SM Friday. Sept. 17th, 1880, ¥ Saaiadiael —— Our daily cotemporary has struck a new lead of bulldosing tactics, and blusters about beyinning a libel suit against us. Oh, pshaw, Falstaff, . you. are growing maudlin, es Assumrne the account of values of Nevada ciuut, property for 1880, aa) just returuedd by the State Baard of Vqualization, to be correct, our people ouglit to he ia a very contented conditivn of mind regarding the prospects of the future. ‘Ths showing which wit befound ih another. col“mn is much more favorable than . that ior 1879, which is included in the’same article asa inatter of reference, ‘Nevada county is’ to all appesrauces in an exceedingly thrifty condition. Ler mines are increasjug in nuinber aud productiveness ; ‘the agricultural and horticalsaral resources are being rapidly developed ; al kinds of industries mechanieal and otherwise are flourishing ; society is inasing rapid ‘strides to“wards that poiut where intelligence and -honestyrank above wealth ; ed= ucational instituvions for the. young are being fostered) with an iaterest not common to early days, Tr Republicans of Nevada county have cause to point with pride to ‘the work cone Wednesday ty their Convention. It is possible? nay prob able, that the party bas never had a ticket that presented so. few weak points. ‘Taken asa whole, the local "2 opposition will tind it hard to beat. --Every naa upon it, so faras we know, has an uuspotted record on the points that the ayerage voter, no matter to what party he belonys, de sires to see encotraged. Chinesedrivers, demagogues, and the like have po place un it. As to the nominees for the Assemb y, their eleotion became a certainty the moment “the convention adopted their names, They are not only practical miners, but also possess a thorough understanding of the wants of the community and force enough to make their {nfluence felt in the Legislature.— The property owners and laboring classes understand the necessities of the hour and appreciate the ‘dangers that threatea the wining interests teo well to permit these three men ee 2 ee Declared Unconstitutional, —— A telegram recuived yesterday afternoon {rum Sheriff Desmond of San Francisco, says that the Supreme Gourt have declared. the County Government’ Bill uncoustitutional. According to this decision somemaintain that the only local candidates to bo voted for at this will be the three Assemblymen, .the Supervisor of Nevada district, justices of the peace, constables, .eoroner. ‘The full ticket will be voted for in spite of the decision, aad test eases Wi.l be tried, douotless, The Deadly Vapor. Matt Provine and his son, and anther man whose name was not furnished us, while working in the Em“pire mine, Grass Valley, on the 700foot level, were overcome by foul air yesterday. One_man was resaued before life was extinct and conveyed to the surface, but is in a very critical condition, Provine and bis som were still in the drift atthe hour of our going to press, and fears are entertained that they are both dead, oo mR “Merling, Good and Reliable.” een nee {Sacramento Record-Union.} The Nevada Taansonpt, a sterling, good ead reliable paper, completed its twentieth yoar September Oth. The Stalwarts Turn Out Em Masse and Give their New Ticket a Lively Send-off—Sensible? Speechees and Merry Music — Mr. Walling’s Masterly Effort. os No political gathering @ Nevada City this campaign has excelled, or perhaps even equalled, ina numbers and enthusiasm the one held Wednesday evening for the purpose of ratifying the nominations made that day by the Republican county con~ vention. The’ speakers’ stand: at thegorner of Broad and Pine streets was tastefully adorned with flags and brilliantly illuminated. The Light Guard band under Mr.-Elser’s awn & Morgan's B ock, bupon the stand-promptly at 8 o'clock and announced that Geo. S. Hupp, Esq.,.whoby the way isa wheelhorse of the Democracy, would call: the meeting to order, Sure enough . ‘the disciple of Hancock ¢t als stepped forward, and after discharying the duties imposed: upon him gracefully retired amidst expressions of amusement and wonderment that greeted his appearance from spectators. It appears that he had been “bantered” by certain Republicans to perform the act, and lin sa spirit of fan accepted the challen se. Major McBride of North San Juan was elected President. In-assuming the chair he said that the Republicans of Nevada county had at their convention that day nomi=. nated an unexceptionable ticket, and. their feeling of satisfaction thereat was fittingly crowned by the }glorious news that had just arrived from ‘down in, Maine.” Victory had already perched on the banners of the Republican party, National, ‘State and county, aud the Democrata couldn’? scare the bird away. “The following additional. officers were aluo «lected: : Vice Presidents—G. A. Etlis_ of Eureka, Seth Martin of Truckee, Joseph Worrell and E. M. Preston} of Nevada City. Secretary—Leonard S. Calkins. The Garfield Glee Club, consisting of Messrs, Medina, Jenk.ns, . Mitchell and Robinson, sang “We'll raly ‘round the polls, boys, we'll rally once again, shouting the name ; of James A, Garfield,” K. P. Sanford, nomineefor Sheriff, and E. A. Roberts, nominee = for County Clerk, were called for and failed to resportd; having returned to Grass Valley. Brief remarks were made by G. von Schmittburg, E,. H. Gaylord, J. A. Rapp, Jonathan Clark, W. D. Long, Collin Anderson (on behalf of R. MeMurray) and J. B, Patterson, After another song by tho Glee) €lub, J. M. Walling, Esq., delivered what is universally characterized by unprejudiced hearers as having been one of the most eloquent, logical and effective campaign speeches ever made at Nevada City in the interests of aby party. After congratulating the Republicans of Nevada county on the unimpregnable ticket they had placed before the voters that day, he humorously referred to the fact that his Democratic friends in the audience had} still further causé for wearing the downcast look that adorned their faces. They had beeg amusing themselves during the day by asking Republicans if they had heard from Maine, ‘ ‘He who laughs last laughs best’,” continued Mr. Walling. ‘Yes, we have heard from Thold in my handa Maine, dispatch just received. It is the latest, news, right from headquarters, and turns the tables on the Democrats. It brings intelligence that the Maine Republicans have elected their Governor, three Congressmen and the Legislature.” The speaker geferred ab length to addresses sacle delivered by Messrs. Glascock and Cross, wherein those gentlemen had attacked the character of Mr. Gar-— field, and had claimed that their re‘marks were substantiated by official records. He alleged emphatically that they had misrepresented every authority they quoted. Judge Hupp was given credit for saying that., the Democratic charge to the effect that Mr. Gariield had sold -himsetf for $329 in.connection with the Credit Mobilier was sheer nonsense. Mr. Sudge R. E. Robinson appeared y every portion of the-vast—thronz—of . it-to-be published in_an official boo, to it that was cale ulated to plaee that the facts had been‘ distorted. “He challenged any Demdcrat to contradict his statements, and said he would give twenty dé jars to anyone who would within the next twenty days find’in the report of the Committee any ciinse that reflected upen Mr. Garfiett’s honesty. He invited any pertons who doubtedhis reading of the linés tocome forward and read for themselves, and as no one accepted the invitation said that the book could be found for re‘erente in his office by al! who desired to see it. As'to the alleged decision ofdtstice Swayue in the De Golyer pavement matter, he said no such case was on record, Justice Swayne had never delivered such a decision, and that mo book containing any such a decision was in the State Library—all of which he had tion. Twenty dollars more were offered to any person who could dis— prove these asseriions. He isaid that from a ‘lawyer's brief, p ab! ished originally hy the New York World, and afterwards denied by J-ustice Swaynd who stid no such cise was before him in the Court. ever Suj areme The spea er charged that the speakers who had prodiaced., the “decision” as an argument, cla img had cut it outof a hewspiipe: ¢ -ancdk pasted into a book for ‘the prarpose of reading it. The money to: pay for the pavement in’ question. bab been raised by taxing the pr opesty to-be beneited, and had noth img -to do with the National Treasu r, as ass -rted. ‘Twenty dollars we re also offered for any records to the contrary. Mr, Walling eulogizod 0 ir. Garfield in eloquent sentences, 2 .nd after vigorously-arraizning thes Southern Domovrats for disloyalty said they would rule the Nation if Hancock were elected. He said the omy argaument the Democracy presented was, ‘‘we wantachang;,” and denounced itas a fool’s ar suraent.
