A high city official had an exciting exporience in a Fifth avenue boarding house _not long ago. He was middle-aged but good-looking, a hachelor, and occupied the parlor floor. He had for years made the boarding house his home, One day a stylishly dressed young woman called and enraged board for herself and husband, The couple had not been long in the house before the woman picked out the parlor floor boarder forher victim. She threw herself in his way all she could. She smiled at him across the table, and cid, all she could to enmesh him. For two weeks she made noimpression. But at the beginning of the third week the parlor boarder fell. He returned the smirks and smiles, and the young beauty found that she had made an impression. Then her husband appeared upon tho scene. ‘He, too, smirked and smiled, but left his wife in the boarder’s company. Things went on swimmingly for a week. Then there was a row. The husband called the boarder into his room, and said that his wife complained of his attentions. He said much more, and much nied it all. The husband raved and stormed, He used vigorous language espccially sprinkled with cuss words. He threatened exposure and’ atrest, but as that was unpleasant, he would be satisfied if the parlor boarder would make: his wife a present of $500. The parlor boarder saw itall. Heagreed. The tearful wife to give the moncy the next. night before dinner. He did so,and then when the soup plates had been taken off the parlor boarder arose, and before the rcomfu) of people denounced the woman as an adventuress and her husband as a ‘blackmailer. There were screeches and tears and denials, and the husband threatened to shoot the handsome occupant of the parlor floor, Paleand agitated that gentlemen poured forth the vials of ‘his wrath until the dinner, was forgotten, and men shouted and women fainted. Then a brawny detective who had been let into the plot, and who was waiting in the kitchen, appeared and offered the man and wife the choice of arrest or the restoration of the $500 and immediate removal from the house. They chose the latter, and in fifteen minutes they were on the street ready to begin operations ovér again. They were not prosecuted because the city official did not care for notoriety, but the woman was one cf the best known crooks in the country, and the man, who was not her husband, had served his time
in halt a dozen State prisons. “There are so many dead-beats now,” ahid the manager of a Broadway hotel, “that it requires the utmost vigilance on the part of our clerks and detectives to protect our guests and ourselves. All sorts of games are worked, and a dozen people around to see that we are not robbed.” “What do they take?” “~~ “Oh, anything. A petty thief will steal postage stamps, © bed-spreads, _pillowshams, towe's, napkins, knives, forks and spoons. I know lots of men who go into our restaurant and try to swindle us by getting checks from waiters, The way they do it is this. Some fellow will come in to-day and get a forty-cent: lunch, While eating it be will get: a forty-cent check: ‘Fhis he will place in bis pocket. Then he will get some dessert or fruit extra, and get a fifty or sixty-cent check from the waiter without exciting suspicion. He will pay the smaller check, and_ the next day repeat the ; rogramme with some other waiter until he gets an assurtmetit of checks that will permit bim to eat what ‘he pleases, and pay as he pleases. .Oh, yes; it requires eternal vigilance to successfully run a restaurant, Then the numberof men and women too —yes, women—who, in a hurry, rush out: without paying, is appalling. : But wé know all. the tricks and by keeping a strict eye on customers donotloseniuch.” All the dry goods stores now employ detectives to watch customers, and many a woman of wealth and eminent re«pectability has been seen to take a piece of lace, or ribbon, or a pair of gloves, or a pocket handkerchief that did not belong to ber. Skillful shoplifters manage to hide a roll of silk or velvet in the folds of their dress without exciting suspicion, and the losses to the dry goods stores from that source alone foot up into fortunes every year, but it is the petty, respectable thieves that give the most trouble and annoyance, and very often their stealings are permitted to go omrather than lose a good customer, Opelady in New York who ia famous for her wealth and charity is spotted as soon as she enters a store; She helps herself to things that do not belong to her inthe most bung}'ng fashion, Every than and woman bebind the counwhat she takes, These things are all itemized and the bill sent to her husband who is a dowi-town commission merchant, He knows his wife's failings and pays the, bill withéut a murmur, for he would follow. = .« vd Ty Hl.
