ne ; pat! Ds “al a DAY MORN EQSE ‘Reduction of Expenditures. -exntnent ‘under the administration of Prosideht/Grant, are reduced to the lowest practigable point. There are two which «, direction can have no ‘control. The one is the interest on the National Debt—the other is the sum paid as Pensions to the scarred and disabled veterans of our late war, ‘These obligations must be «et with promptness and cheerfulnéss unless we are prepared on the one hand to repndiate our obligations’ te the men who risked their lives and test their health in defense of the Government, or on the _ other hand to treat the public creditors with downright dishonesty and inflict lasting disgrace on ‘the name of our country. Exeluding these two items therefore as imperative, and not within _ the discretion of the executive or legislative branch of the Government, says Speaker Blaine in a recent letter, we find tlie following as the sum total of our expenditures for the current fiscal Yours. aD Military Academy...$ . 814,869 20 Deficiencies...+... 6,419,694 46 Dipl and Consular os dass cvewens < 1041207 00 Works of Defence... 1,811,500 00 Rivers’ dnd Harbors... 3,945,900 00 ~~ Office ent, beyond the amouat reved from » 5,000,000 00. 2, Ex: Byneg aia expenses, 18,949,258 40 Sundry Civilexpenses, 13,487,634 70. 29,821,367 22 Army . eeeveesesoeeesene 19,250,290 29 Navy se: peeroecsene Indian Department.. 6,828,565 02 . $105,815,426 29 “The last Democratic administration that was in full power in this country under President Buchanan, spent for the objects embraced in ‘this schedule something over seventy millions per annum in gold—un equivalent in paper to-day of eighty-five millions of dollars. The population of the country wasthen less than thirty millions. It is now, forty millions, so that President Grant would be entitled by the ratio which has always erned expenditure in this country, to spend # third more in the administration of the Government than was required under Buchanan, which would bring the sum total to one hundred and fourteen millions of dollats, when in reality it is but one hundred and five millions. The details of expenditure in the two periods will also show immensely in favor of President Grant’s economy, Under President Buchanan the army consisted of nineteen regiments, the maintenance of which cost the four yeats.of that Administration, af average of over twenty-one millions each year—more than a million dollars per annum in gold, or about thirteen hundred thousand dol: lars in the paper money of today for each regiment. The army at present consists of forty regiments, yet its whole maintenance for the year costs but twenty-nine millions of dollars, a trifle over seven hundred thousand dollars in paper money to each regiment. I have selected the Army, merely because.comparison in that branch of the public service is easy and the result palpable, . The same statement is true iu all the other departments of the Government, and if the limits I have _ assigned to this letter permitted it, I could readily demonstrate that under Republican administration the national expenditure has been more carefally guarded, and rigid economy far more carefully consulted than under preceding Democratic administrations, The amounts expended have necessarily been very large and the temptation to extravagance thus greatly enhanced, henee the adherence to severe economy and strict accountability is all the more praiseworthy and ad hdnarable,” ill adh bill: Mieeen ss ae Ue, PRR. eh, Celieer of. Within’ the past few weeks quite a number of rich pockets have been struck in the vicinity of Rush creek. Last week $67 25 was found by an enterprising prospector in one little pocket of a quartz ledge. Successfal. a Some of our hurters have, during the past two days, succeeded in bringing in large quantities of game, and it 4s suspected that more silver than lead was expended in their capture, ‘Advocate of Peace. Grass Valleyans. <a ’ More Peace Rumors.—By one dispatch we are informed that King William will not hear propositions for peace from any source except the Regency and the old Legislature. On the same day we are also informed that he will makea treaty with the Republicans, provided Paris will first capitulate, In this way from day to day we are treated by reporters with a mass of contradictory information in regard to Eurépean matters, most of it equally improbable: The general tone of the dispatches indicates, without question, that the French are exceedingly anxious for peace, and the whole policy of King William, as shown by his decla. rations to his own people at the beginning and during the progress of the war, shows that he will not be disposed to prolong the struggle. The whole moral support of Europe will be then in favor of speedy peace, and that it will come soon there is every reason for believing. continue the French declare their intention to defend the Capital: to its very destruction. -Preashiag-#t-the Bapliot Gburch Sanday, If the latter is found, fare thee well ‘} and allow the teachers to attend the the) war} « allowed to wear shel attire, She states that she has worn maseuline habili-. ments for twenty years, and wishes to continue to do so. open an establishment in this city for the sale of California wines, she wishes to be protected against arrest for dressing in male sttire, against which there is a city ordimance. With her petition she sent a document bearing the signature of the Clerk of theDistrict Court of Amador County, California, which was given her to serve as a pro~ ‘tection against arrest, and which speaks of her as an industrious and virtuous woman, and one possessed of considerable real-estate in that county. With this document, which is certified ‘to and countersigned by the French Consul, at San Francisco, it appears that she made a trip to France and other countries of Europe. The document states that she first adopted male attire in 1850, upom her arrival +o California, that not finding anything to do in San Francisco, and not wishing to lead alife of prostitution she dressed in men’s clothes and went to money enough to start in business. THE ADVANCE ON PaBis,—The dispatches report a force of Prussians in Vincennes. ‘This is a small villiage four miles east of Paris, standing in the midst of a park, which isa favorite resort for pleasure seekers. “The castle in this place was strongly fortified, and was used as an artillery schoool and depot for the garrisons of Paris until the war. It is within the outer circle of forts forming a part of the defences of Paris. The report states that the fort was blown up. Some of the old hard shell Democrats of the West are still harping on the greenback question and contending that the 5-20 bonds are payable in currency, It strikes us that this “issue” is about dead. Since greenbacks are worth about 90 cents on the dollar, and specie payment, or its equivalent, is so near at hand, the matteris ina fair way to regulate itself long before these antedeluvians get meat discussing the questien. A STATEMENT prepared at the Post Office Department shows that the expenses during the current year will fall below the estimates. The estimates are only $1,882,961 50 more than was expended last year, while there are 856 new post offices, 616 new money order offices and 24,000 of new routes. ~ weenie, DEXTER’s Tims EQUALLED.—Op the 15th inst.,a gréat race took place at Prospect ‘Park, New Yerk, between Goldsmith Maid -to harness and Honest Allen and running mate to wagon.
