ELLIOTT F. SHEPARD’S FIRST LOVE.
It Was Innocent, but Not Lasting—A.
9 Story of the Great Man's Youth and
' One of His Love Letters. ;
New York, much as it is accustomed to
journalistic surprises and novelties, has
not been so startled for many a year as
one, and the daily insertion of aScriptural ©
text overthe editorial column. Colonel
Shepard rather prides himself on his
consistency, as although a large stockholder in the Fifth avenue stage line he
strenuously opposed the running of the
deep religious feeling and his di
-of Mammon when Christian principles
areconcerned. The following isa faithful report of a conversation between two
eharacter:
“I should think {t would be awfully M. F. Hamblett,
nice to ride down on theseatagea.on Sunday, and see the styles on Fifth avenue.”
“Yes, but Colonel Shepard don’t like
to have the stages runon Sunday. He
thinks it’s wicked.” : ins
“Colonel Shepard—who is he?’’ ;
“He's the president of this stage line,
the son-in-law of Mr. Vanderbilt, and the
pious editor of the Mail and Ezpress.
He heads all his editorial pages with a
Scriptural text.”

must listen carefully, for it’s a great
secret. He once loved Alma, our seamatress. ’’ x :
“Oh, no!’ ~
‘But itis true. It wasages.ago, before
he knew Miss Vanderbilt, when he was
very young, and they lived out our way,
and one wasn’t any richer or better than
the other. He used to write her the loveHest little love letters—so good and innocent. I know, forl’veseenthem, Well,
he loved and wrote, and she loved and

People generally ask as to another
country, “What sort of food did you
have?” Well, to choose’ out the moat
genuinely Dutch dishes we had, perhaps,
potato purec, or bouillon, flavored with
chervil, and containing balls of veal force
meat. The fish might be soles or plaice,
but, to give me kindly a more national
delicacy, we had water bass from the
canals sometimes. These are about the
size 01 vur trout, an'l are served up, half
ado en or so, in aceep dish, swimimin
in the water they are boiled in, davoreg
with “iiat leaved parsh y.”” ,
Water base ure eaten with thin sandwiches of rye bread; Wut without the
latter, and the bread ani butter only, 1
thought thei excellent.
Another night we had a jack, done
Dutch fashion: When boiled, all the
amall bones were removed, and the fish
chopped up and mixed with butter, pepper. onions and savory herbs. ‘ihen,
rolled back; into fish-like shape, the jack
is browned, tread crunbed and eaten
always with salad. Jt was really very
good. Next came generally roast or
stewed veal or beef, mutton. being ‘so
rit is rarely eaten. For vegetables,
invariable potatoes, excellently cooked,
wita butter, aud besides those we likewise use boiled endives and bread
crumbed cabbage. l’artridges followed,
sornetimes au choux, or other ganie,
Wild ducks were plentiful and some
neighbors hud just had an early dawn’s
sportout in the dunes, getting ninety-four
birds to four guns, “Not so bad, but still
not very good,” said the Irrepressible.
Of sweets and savories I need give fio
hints, because they were mostly of
French origin.
