We tin 1 it is the practice of msimbdaers to submit their quarterly reports with the indetinite statement. that they have purchased urticles for county account. In many cases. there are no to. ite:aized acéounts, bills or vouchers «ccompanying the reports. This in no evidence of fraud, but it is a questionabls method of doing business. We demand that it be discontinued and @ more thorough one adopted. We demand that tie Supervi-ors of Districts 1, 2, 3, 4 and5 shail tile each bill of whatever nature with their re. lo in protecting said county. ports, and shall have each bill allow: ed separately.” The Auditor is hereby requested. not to audit any road bills allowed by the Supervisors except they file as above requested, It having come to the knowledge of . this Grahd Jury that certain Justices of the Peace of this county are not in the habit of entering up cost bil s, we demand that they comply with the law in this and every other particular. Judge Soward's Decision Sustained. The Supreme Court has sustained the decision uf the Superior Court of this countyin the case of Harriet Dower vs. Phil. Richards. Judge Soward of Sierra county presided at the trial, Judge Walling being disqualified, and 1 found for defendant. This was a suit for $8,000 damages, for bulkheading a mining tunnel which plaintiff's husband and son had run under her direction into defendant’s houselot on Piety Hiil, this city. The bulkheading had prevented plaintiff from prosecuting the mining enterprise. A Novel Mining Scheme. A dispatch from Redding, Shasta county, says: ‘‘G. W. The performance will prove interesting nof only to the little fulks who attend, but-those of a larger growth wil find much in it to enjoy. The story as told in the juvenile book is familiar to the average reader, and as depicted in the operetta loses none of its interest or force. A group of children, whose home is in the forest, are gathered in a ‘shady dell, singing of their happy, woodland life. A little flower-girl wandering thréugh the vale, scatters the group to quiet nook and glen. She recalls them to know their mission, and begs to become one of their happy number, which request is granted. She has bern previously warned of their beautiful Queen, who, though so fuir, would lure her intodanger. The Queen, hearing that Bruin has made his home in Forest-land, seeks “A maiden with such charm, That she’s proof aguinst all harm.” to go and search the cot, and to bring her the wonderful jewels which she has heard are in Bruin’s liome. The flower girl is summoned, and the Queen, overcome with her beauty,
makes her princess upon the throne with herself, g ving her the name of Golden Hair. Dwelling in the wood is an ancient. Bard, who warns of coming danger, and sings the eyening lullaby of the Forest children. In gentle tones he now warns Golden Hair to beware of the wily Queen. Bruin having heard of the Forest children, guards well the treasures hidden in the cot. While‘at a meul, the Bears hear the merry Forest children, and hasten to scatter the foe, returning with a loud hurrah fur Bruin, Mammy ‘Muff and Tiny Cub. : The Queen reveals her seéret to Golden Hair, and promises wealth and beanty. it the young princess will go and steal the jewels for her -coronet. The faithful Bard again appears and warns of coming danger. As night iv approaching, Golden Hair recline» upon a gras~y mound, whilethe Bard’s sweet lullaby soon curries. her to dreamland. The three Bears, on an evening stroll, discover the little maiden, but are frightened away by the Will-o’-the-Wisp, who calls the children from near and far to twilight rest. Again the Bard’s soothing lullaby quiets the group, till nodding they all fall asleep. A new day finds Golden Hair in t!.e home of the three Bears. Bruin and family being away, the maiden examines the cot, tastes the porridge and tests the chairs and beds, till wearied she falls asleep upon Tiny Cub’s couch. The Bear-, returning, declare that some ‘one has been in. Golden Hair is finally caught upon Tiny Cub’s bed, and the Bears, in great excitement, proceed to secure the cot, lest she escape, forge:ting an open lattice window near by. The voice of the Bard is again heard, below the window, calling her to come quickly, for her life. She hurries to the window, and waving « “goodby” to the three Bears, 1s soon’ off through horrified Bears. The Forest child:en are now searcning for their lost one through the weod. Faithful reveals the fact that their Queen has beyu led Golden Hair into a snare, which has probably been the cause of her death. The enraged children depose the Queen from the throne, and in sadness” she retires in disgrace from Forestland. The merry voice of Golden Hair is heard in the distance, return_Ling with the Bard. The happy children hasten to greet her, and cheerily escort her back to the lovely vale. of the f.llen Queen, and the operetta Closes with the Joud echo of ‘Long live our noble King!” ——————————EE Buckicn’s Arnica salve. The B.oomfield Mining Elevator. Mining in the North Bloomfield Company’s gravel cl tim by the elevator process gives employment toabout forty men in all and yields mo.lerately good returns. A bank about 135 feet high is being operated on at preserit, and the system of settling reseryvuirs enables the Company ‘to. have. the matter Well settled before it passes in to the South Yuba river. Samples. o! this water are gathered daily at the lower mouth of the tunnel and bottled for future reference in case they shou d be required as evidence in court or elsewhere. The elevator method of mining is not of course nearly so profitable as hydraulicking,: but in the North Bloomfield ground, where there is more or less gold scattered all through the dirt from bedrock to ‘surface, it pays infinitely better than drift mining would. Qe The Brunswick Mine. The Union of yesterday says: The shaft of the Brunswick mine has been timbered from the surface to the adit level, a distance on the ini line of over 180 feet. A station is being cut out on the ad.t level, and the incline is also being sunk for the No. 2 level, sever il sets of timbers having been put in. The hoisting works -building is up, and most of the machinery in place, except that the Pelion wheel which is to drive the machinery is not quite ready. It. will not be many days, however, before the Water will -be turned on, when the work of sinking» can be prosecuted mueb: faster than at any time heretofore. ‘Misery After Eating Is avoided by dyspeptics who, guided by the recorded experience of thou sands, begin and sysetmatically pursue a course of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. Persistence in the use of this pare and highly accredited stomichic, is the sole and ayreeable condition o1 the entire removal of the obstinate forms of dyspepsia, no less than a temporary fit of indigestion. In connection with the use of this specific, it is desirable to avoid articles of food which individual experience has ~hown to be diflicult of dize-tion, by the stomach sought to be benefited. Each dy-peptic’s past observation of his digestive capacity shoud enable him to be his own guide and mentor in this particular, not trusting to any set of dietetic rules too peneral to be suited to partictlir cases. Biliousness and costipation, heartburn, wind upon the stomach, sour eructations, headache and mental des pondency, are amony the commitants of dyspepsia, and we put it to flight by the Bitters, Hav Xever is a type of catarrh having peculur symptoms.
