From the Fair.
Most of our citizens who went to the
State Fair are returning, the fair
having closed on Saturday. The greater
part of them speak of the races as better than any ever seen in the State
and the industrial display as fully up
to that of preceeding fairs.

supply their places by new plahtations.
It is estimated that, from 1850 to 1860,
twenty million ‘acres of timber. land
were brought under cultivation, and
that‘in the present-decade no less. than
a hundred millions will be so reclaimed.
But in such cases the loss of timber is
compensated to some exterit ‘by the
abundant production of the soil. , Not
soon this coast. Every.season, from
the summit to the foot hills,fires sweep
through the woods, destroying extensive tracts of the very best timber. In
this county thousands of dollars worth;
of good timber was destroyed by the
fire which swept over the. Washington.
ridge. In the vicinity of Truckee, ex-.
tensive fires raged through the woods,
and in one instange several hundred.

. market, was destroyed. Other localities have suffered in like manner, and
in some places the charred trunks and .
burnt logs cover the ground where

Hunting Party.
Yesterday morning A. B. Gregory,
John fairchild B. F. Stoakes, W. R.
Coe,and Mr. Worthington,of Worthington’s ranch, left this city for a:week’s
hunting and fishing in Nierra Valley.
Their commissary. was well. supplied
with everything except meat which
they expect to get with their guns.
We shall keep a sharp lookout for
grouse when the hunters return.
