In the nor of Utah, has taken the Mormon) past five days four capies of the Saérabull by the horns, and entered upon a{ mento Union, failed to reach us on policy.which bids.fuir.to-insure. the time, and only one of the missing numspeedy administration of law in that lo-. bers bas-yet_turned up. With other cality. The Governor has issued two . papers it is almost as bad. There isan proclamations,—tbe first’ appoiting P, &, Connor Major General of militia and Tred Pins bo the wr nal ‘. is started, and it appears to be more uncertain in regard to Sacramento than evil somewhere that ought to be remedied, and we think itis very likely W. The mail bags all méétings’ or gatherings of ‘armed persons in the ‘territory, ‘except under Sederal authority, or at the call of the. United States Marshal. For years the head of the Mormon Church has not only exercised temporal power, and ‘seem t> come through all right every day but there don’t appear to be much discrimination in making up the contents. The mails ought to bring letters and papers as promptly af the ex-, press. ‘of all-law, but under pretext of religion has openly violated the laws of the land >ythe--perpetration. of the grossest crimes, The authority of the United States has been nominally sustained, while Brigham Young has ruled with absolute power, and his’ followers have . committed most henious crimes at his instigation. The Courts have been. powerless, because the juries selected ' to try cases were in league with the ‘triminals, and ‘the “Destroying Angels” _ of Mormondom, ‘under the guise off _masked ruffians, have continued thejri. works of assassination to smother opposition to the Church and keep out. Co. vs. Braummagin.— { ~—‘Gentilesfrom-~Brigham’s “promise nemurrer argued, submitted and taken land.” We are heartily glad that a Governor has been found with determination to overthrow the Mormon power and vindicate the Jaws of the land.! . ‘That Brigham Young will abandon his ~~ \ military organization without opposi-. -Yion, is dovibtful, and before the proclamation.of Governor Shaffer can be enforced, it may be necessary fer the avernment to-send an .armed force into this Territory tosustain the Governor in his policy, General Connor is not unknown in California, and he ‘has had considerable experience in Utah. His appointment indicates that General 4 Shaffer not only intends ‘a show of authority, ‘but will follow closely upon his proclamation with, acts tending to establish law in every part of’the territory, In the event of opposition to his administration, the policy of which had _ been settled in Washington before his proclamations were issued, we shall . . look for lively times in Utah. ‘under advisement by the Court. “Smiths. State Constitusign, s0 as to enfranchise those who e in rebellion. The party headéd by McClurg for Governor opposes, and, that headed by B. Gratz Brown for the same position favors enfranchisement. Carl-Shurz is stumping the State for Brown, and he is sap: ported by leading Republican papers. As Congress has long since removed the disabilities for participating in re. bellion, and other States have changed local laws for the same purpose, thé Brown party would seem to be in sympathy: with the National Republican party. ‘Pus wife of Sir John Young, Gover: . : nor Genéral of, Canade, has notified Grass Valley township. From the Fair. Most of our citizens who went to the State Fair are returning, the fair having closed on Saturday. The greater part of them speak of the races as better than any ever seen in the State and the industrial display as fully up to that of preceeding fairs. n Candidate. Thos. P. Baudcin sub-, In the estate of Patrick Bohannan, dethere will be an actual famine Toe wood in the country within thirty years, unless immediate measures are‘taken to supply their places by new plahtations. It is estimated that, from 1850 to 1860, twenty million ‘acres of timber. land were brought under cultivation, and that‘in the present-decade no less. than a hundred millions will be so reclaimed. But in such cases the loss of timber is compensated to some exterit ‘by the abundant production of the soil. , Not soon this coast. Every.season, from the summit to the foot hills, fires sweep through the woods, destroying extensive tracts of the very best timber. In this county thousands of dollars worth; of good timber was destroyed by the fire which swept over the. Washington. ridge. In the vicinity of Truckee, ex-. tensive fires raged through the woods, and in one instange several hundred. cords of wood, which had been cut for; . market, was destroyed. Other localities have suffered in like manner, and in some places the charred trunks and . burnt logs cover the ground where magnificent timber.steod at the beginning of the season. Some action should he taken by the State Legislature for the preservation of thé forests, and for the severe punishment of any who . through carelessness or. design kindle these fires. Already wood is becoming scarce, and year by year the fires are co sekiek gether with the destructive fires will soon materially affect the State. Hunting Party. Yesterday morning A. B. Gregory, John fairchild B. F. Stoakes, W. R. Coe,and Mr. Worthington,of Worthington’s ranch, left this city for a:week’s hunting and fishing in Nierra Valley. Their commissary. was well. supplied with everything except meat which they expect to get with their guns. We shall keep a sharp lookout for grouse when the hunters return.
