Such was.the remark made to us. .
‘by'a lady on the street, yesterday.
We asked for an explanation. She.
said: ‘Mr. Local, you stated in the
Transcript this morning, that. Mr.
A. Goldsmith had. just received the
largest, richest, prettiest and the
cheapest stock of .Dty-Goods ever
brought into a mountain town, and
‘that they were of the latest styles.
I went there, and I must say, that
the half has not been told. His stuck
is really elegant, and I want you to.
tell your readers that I bought $75
worth of goods of Goldsmith, and
they. would have cost me $150 at any
other establishment-in the State.
‘The ladies of the county are very
verdant if they don’t go to Goldsmith’s immediately and take advantage of the bargains offered.”” The
lady was very enthusiastic, and she
only expressed the opinion of all the
ladies that have visited Goldsmith’s
establishment. iia

Short Weight in Flour.
As flour is seldom weighed by purchase, it is easy for manufacturers
wel@ht. A day or two ago, sacks of
flour from the Plaza mills, Marysville, weighed at three different businegs houses in this city, and in every
instance they were found to be short
A sack thatshould weigh
49 pounds onlycontained 46, and
one that should weigh 98 pounds only contained 9314 pounds. This
mode of swindling is an outrage upon
consumers and an annoyance to dealers. We advise people buying flour .
theit money.

have charge of the boarding tent on
the camp ground from Friday next

knows how to conduct a boarding establishment, and will furnish all who
attend the camp meeting with board
by the week, or with single ‘meals.
During the meeting his restaurant in

Another Bire at Truckee. ,
On Saturday night the dwelling
house of A. C, Cook, at Truckee, was
entirely destroyed by fire. By the
€xertion of citizens the fire was prevénted from spreading to other buildings in the vicinity. The loss is
about $800.

A correspondent of the Scientific
American writes concerning a petrified bird’s nest and eggs found in
this county. We presume, says the
Grass Valley Union, the account was
sent to a distance and not to any of
the Nevada county papers, because
the story will not bear investigation.
Who among the You Bet people
knows about that bird’s nest? The
Sorrespondent says: The most remarkable petrifaction I ever saw wasfound in the mining’ ground of Messts. Nichols and Ennis, in the You
‘Bet mining district in California,
It consisted of a bird’s nest and eggs,
perfectly solidified, the eggs retaining their natural size and shape.
The nest was somewhat flattened,
and what had evidently been the
straws and twigs of which it had at
former times been composed, were
like threads of glass. Some of the
€ggs were broken before the nest
Was discovered, the shells seemed
thickened but very httle, if any.
What had apparently been the inside of the egg, was now a little dab
of glass. This nest was taken from
the fork of a large fossil tree, where
it had been for ages, undisturbed in
it8 cosy resting ‘place until wood,
Rest and eggs had passed away, and
