Ep.ror Transcrirr~There seems
to be some feeling still in this com:
munity regarding the missing man
Harrison, and I propose to give
what few facts I possess and what
has led my suspicions up to the parties mentioned below, The public
can then judge for themselves as to
his probable death or hiding if alive,
When I returned from Sacramento
on the 2d instant and found Harrison
had not been at Snow Tent, and that
he had not been seen since the night
of the 26th of August, I instituted: a
search, Finding he had been agen
in Wilson’s saloon at 10 and 10:30
o'clock P, M. on the 26th of August,
TI repaired to the saloon and asked
Mrs. Wilson if Mr, Harrison: had
been there on the 26th, ‘She said no
I said, “Mrs. Wilson put. on your
thinking cap, for Mr. A. EB. Wood]
ruff and Mr. M. Calanan: both saw
him here. Mr. Woodruff treated
him to a glass of beér and you served
them,” She said, ‘Oh no, he was
not here. Mr. Woodruff is mistaken,
He promised to come but did not.”
She left the room and I. asked Mr.
Wilson (then on his death bed) to
tell me where Harrison was, but he
would not answer my question, I
went to Mr. Woodruff and stated
what she told me. He said it was
all right; that he would swear on a
stack of bibles that. he saw and
treated him on that vight in that saloon about 10;30 o’clock, He referred
me to his day book on which was a
charge fixing the date beyond questicn as Mr, Calanan had the package
in question in his hand when he saw
Harrison sitting and talking with
her at the far end of the saloon. On
returning home I found Harrison had
said he had promised to go up ‘and
was going. She admitted his promise
to come, but said he did ‘not come,
This flat denial being made in the
face of proof that would hang a man
naturally aroused my suspicions, and
I went for a detective to work up
the case. Whilé workiag up the
ease, Wilson suddenly died and the
public are acquainted with some of
the facts, At the post mortem examination bruises and scratches were
discovered on his legs from near. the
hips to and below the knees, They
were evidently the marks of the four
tingers of a human hand clutching at
the legs while in a desperate ‘struggle. The victim must have been on
the floor as the skin was torn downward and clear through on the right
leg, but not so deep on the left: but
the full four finger marks were on
the leg whereever the hand touched,
showing the struggle was in earnest. The legs were also brui sed
some, The theory that he might
have scratched himself in his last
struggles won’t wash, as the deep
scratches were. healing over and
looked, as Dr. Manson expressed. it,
as thongh they had been made eight
or ten days,. Now Mrs. Wilson told
me she was the last one up in the saFrom the noise heard about 11
o'clock it is evident there was trouble in the saloon. . Query: What becarre of my man Harrison and. how
did Wilson get those, scratches and
bruises on the bare skin? He had
evidently no clothes on his lower
infiicted, Mrs. Wilson doubtless was
the last person living who saw Harrison at Columbia Hill; “As she will
not admit of his being there or tell
what she knows about him, how can
she blame the public for suspecting
quiet, polite, peaceable and. sober
man while with me, I hope no unfounded slanders will deter the public from continuing searching insmi for his body dead or alive.
