A Boms IN THE CopperneaD Camp—
By reference to our telegraphic column it
will be seen that Sheridan has routed an army
of Democrats under Early in the Shenandoah
Valley., The rebels were driven 12 miles,
and left the dead upon the field. “Our
flag goes marching on,”* and McClellan's
ehances for the Presidency grow beautifule
ly less.
Minne aT CaeroKee.—The little eamp
of Cherokee, once a: Bourishing mining town
but almost entirely “deserted for the past
year, begins to aseume a lively appearance
again. The last dry season, and the Washoe.
excitement, well nigh used the town up.—
But now, many-.of the old residents are re.
turning and preparing for the coming season.
The Lake Water Co. is about conveying
water throngh an iron p:pe from> Cherokee
to Badger Hill, where there are sume excellent claims. Companies are sinking upon
the bottom at Shady Creek and Badger Hill,
with the view to strike the blue cement,
which is very rich. All the claims in:that
rectiva of the county are being fitted.up preparatory to’ the approaching season, and
should there be ‘plenty of water, thousauds
RarTner Heavy.—Yesterday a strariger
went inte-a.saloon_in this city for the pur-.
pose of “imbibuating,” and invited a friend
of ours to drink, Stranger proposed the
fullowing after the glasses had ‘been filled :
_“As Frank R. would say, here’s many haps
py days.” The following dialogue then
came off:
Citizen. “‘Where did you know Frank 1”
Stranger. “At Kanaka Creek.”
Citizen, who had resided there. wishing to
call himself to stranger’s mind, alluded toa
name by which he was fawilarly known as
* follows:
“Did you know ——— that used to live
there?”
Stranger. “Yes. he was a d—d drunken
bugger, waa’nt he 7’
Our friend had pressing business in ‘another-quarter, while the “bar-keep” waa compelled to knock several glasses dowa and.
pick them up again to bide bia emotions.

WHO CAN BEAT IT?—We yesterday saw
a cluster of grapes of the Black Hamburg
variety from the garden of Jonathan Clark,
Piety Hill, which weighed five pounds and
one ounce, This is the largest bunch of
grapes we have ever seen in any country. .
Several persons from European grape grows
ing countries pronounce this cluster the largest they have ever seen. The grapes are
very large and so compact as tv be compress.
ed. This bunch may be seen at the saloon of
Carley & Potter.

BULLY GrapPes.—We yesterday received
from Waite’s: vineyard, on Piety Hill,a
basket of fine, large and most luscious grapes
of the Black Hamburg variety. We have
never seen any thing in the grape line that
could excel them. We understand there is
a emall quantity of the kind, that will.come
to market as they ripen. For the present,
’. persone may find grapes from the vineyard,
at Peyran’s, on Commercial street,. and
Brigg’, on Broad street, and we can say to
sll there isnone and can be none better.
WaANTs Tv SELL.—Col. Potter bre a
highly colored picture of ¢.Little Mac”
which he desires to sell: The picture is
warranted to make a better show in the
Presidential fight than the original.
Dotne WELL.—The parties in Grass Va's
ley, enys the National, who were injured by
the stage accident, the other day, on the
Neweastle road, are getting slong remarksbly well. Spear and. Donahey—each of
whom had a leg broken—have had their
limbs set, and, considering the circumsetare
es; are getting along finely. James. Hae

Company, came to that place immediately on
" Feceipt of the news of the accident, and mado
Fessedden—has achieved an envinble reputation ‘on the ‘field of battle; a third is a
Colonel-on General Hooker's’ staff. Secretary Fessenden, although of an anti-slaver
family, has been styled a “conservative,”

have been characterized by that name: He

Greepbacks Again!
CARD has been published charging Mc
A Lane & Co. with paying a bill of $64 26 in
Greenbacks, but the author of the Card neglect
ed to state that suit was breught against the
Compan), and as a consequence he was paid in
Greenbacks. NO AGREEMENT was made to pay
the bill in GoLD Coin. Under similar eircumstances we, as well as all sensible people, should
expect them, especially from the LITTLE
GENTLEMAN. McLANE & CO,
Nevada, Sept. 14th, 1844.
The Greenback Question. .
NSWER TO McLANE & ‘COMPANY’s CARD —In regarc to suit being
teen months we have dunned McLane & Company for the small sum of $64 25, some of the firm
wiring as the reason for not paying, that one of
the Company had failed to pay his Assessments
and at the same time telling us that they-would
like to have us bring suit as by that means the
oue in arreacs would be obliged to pay up.—
Another of the firm telling us if we wouid-sue
he would pay in coin—we brought suit. It Low
seems the objret was moreto have an EXCUSE
for paying Greenbacks than from anv desire to
make the delinqueut pay up, thereby effecting a
saying of about Two Dollars to each one of the
Company, which amount probably is considered
of more importance te them than the name of being honorable business men.

1 have used a Florence Sewing Machine two
years. {brought it with me across the plaine ;
t has never yet been vut of order, and I can truly say that itexcels all other Machines ehat I
have used. I ranaLadd & Webster six months
a Wheeler & Wilson & Wilson eight months, ana
used a Grover & Baxer ulternately with Sloat’s
for two years. I am familiar with the Howe and
several of the small machines, but I never used
one that would do all kipds of work to equal the
Florence. I do not think it can be too highly
recommended. Mrs Isaac ELLIs, Marysville.
Ihave had my Florence Sewing Machine for
three years.I purchased one of the first made
at the manufactory, and brought it to this State
with me. Ihave used it almost steadily, and
have never had the first thiag get out of order.

I have used the Wheeler & Wilson about two

in several of the small machines until thoroughlv disgusted with every machine that sews with
only one thread. The Florence 1s the only Machine that as come under my notiee that ‘givesperfeet and entire satisfaction on all kinds oft

have used and tested it, as Ihave done Indeed
for thin work it is invaiuabie. :

I believe IT can fully and conscientiously indorse each qualification claimed for the Florence
Maehine. 1 have thoroughly tested it en work .
of all -grades and each trial has been<eminently
satisfactory. It takes hold of delicate fabric deljea'ely, and ofa strong one with strength. ~To
me,-it seems more than a Machme—an almost.
intelligent willing helper. Its use is easily
learued, and its construction is certainly gimple.
