LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Mining etc., in Eureka,
A correspondent writing us: from
Erieville, under Hate of September
13th, says that quartz mining and
prospecting runs at fever heat in this
district. New claims are discovered
* and baptized, so also are new towns.
Capital and perseverance is the forergnner of towns and population:
' The Erie mine is by far the most extensive and the richest in the district, and I opine it will cope favorably with the best .in the’ county.
—This mine is—undergoing a thorough
renewal of allits -‘machinery—new
‘pumps, new engines, new hoisting
works, etc. The prospect is splen. did. Its third level is complete, the
main shaft prospected all the way,
and in sinking an-air and timber
shaft 200 feet morth of it, there has
been a rich discovery made, being no
less than a’ splendid ledge, the principal part of the rock being lined
with free gold. I don’t know the
size‘df the ledge. Under the able
and judicious managenient of Messrs.
Holland & Ryder, this mine is destined to’ make a record in Nevada
eounty. They are ready to start
drifts from their main shafts to develop the 300 foot level. ‘There are
between fifty and sixty men employedin the miné, Thesuperintendent
is busy preparing for the coming
Winter, laying up stores ‘ef cord
wood, round and square timbers, ete.
By appearance this place has stability unknown in ‘other mining localities. Tha citizens have petitioned
the Board of Supervisors to grant
them a precinct at the ensuing Presidential election. I believe it should
bé granted, as there ure between 45
and 50 voters residents of this place,
aud quite a .nuniber of seattering
votes: outside that I believe will be
foréed to come to this place by the
new law as living within the precinct. The precinct should also be
established because there is a prospect of its permanency. :
. They have struck the ledge at the
Ancho. It is about six feet wide; but
the owners are not content with this,
and are still running in hopes of
finding another, although the one
discovered prospects well.
The Rhode Island lode is. a splendid thing. It was disvevered by
John Quincy Babb, and it prornises
to be u fortune to those interested in
Th, The claims are located 124 miles
from Graniteville.
The Rising Star or Grizzly mine
is apmyitie one, and the owners are
working a number of men. Gaston
Ridge promises fortunes to all those
interested, both in quartz and gravel.

$2,000. This is certainly encouraging to the miners of that locality,
aud indicates that the gravel channels are still rich in gold.
