Our people were highly pleased yesterday on learning three weeks, tuey bad ug idea that its closing wonld have sach an effect upon the business in. town. They . Hank. During the panic which has just passed, thousands ef depositors . rushed like maniacs to the various banks for their money, which was really. in safer hands than if they had loaned it out to other. parties or buried itin the ground. We think the taught many a good lesson. So far as the run ou the Bank of Nevada County was concerned, it was the most absurd move that was ever made. “fhe doots were kept open longer tan any bank in the State, upon it. ors were unworthy of confidence, and. had not the means to pay the depositors, then no blame could be at. tached to any one for, wanting their money. But here the contrary was the case. The officers of the bank ure men of undoubted lionesty and “for every one the bank owed. As soon as the bank was closed, several men of wealth, who had all their money invested-in various kinds of property, came forward and offered Mr. Tully, the President of the Bank, their securities and property to pledge to timid holders of eertificates of deposit, if he desired it, showing that they understood the situation thoroughly, and were’ willihg to do all in their power to sustain an institution which wasa credit to the town, and had done more than all others to make and improve business so that every resident had felt its good effect. One man alone, a former tésident, who is worth about one ‘million of do!lars, offered to give his note, well secured in collaterals, if desired, for, every dollar the Bank of Nevada County owed, he knowing that’ the certificates of deposit were worth one hundred cents on thedollar. Five other men, who are worth double the amount the bank owed to depositors, also tendered their assistance in the same way. Owing to the great scarcity of coin they could not get it, else that would have been done instead of tendering property. Mr. Tully found out it was a ‘‘wild goose ohase”’ for coin, and concluded that “the bank should not be opened again until he could procure the coin to pay all depositors who wished it. He remained in San Francisco until nearly all his arrangements . ‘weré completed, and returned en . Sunday night’ He called the Di» rectors together, and upon an exam ination of the affairs it was ascertained that the Bank could pay dollar for dollar, and have one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars left. Could a better showing be made for its capital by any bank in the world? We think not. It is as we stated before, one of the very ‘safest institutiotis for depositors in the State, and we hope the people will be ‘now convinced of the fact, and not play the part which is unworthy the act of a reasonable mind. We do not believe a dollar will be drawn out of the, bank to-day, except for the usual business purposes.
