Lawler, of Oakland, arrived here Saturday and willremain awhile for the benefit of her health. 8. W. Knox, of the King Bridge Company, has arrived here to ruperintend the repairs to Suspension Bridge. J.C. Mulligan is here attending to his duties as shorthand reporter in the Superior Court. Ball, of San Francisco, who is in the office of the Auditor ot the Central Pacific Railroad «om pany, was in town Sunday. A few weeks ago, Dan McCauley broke his leg while working on a railroad in Oregon. He expects to return to Nevada City before long. Tidings: Mrs. Leslie Coombs, who has been spending two weeks or more with her father at Town Talc, is now the guest of Mrs. Chas. W. Kitts at Grass Valley. Mise Edith Williams, daughter of Thomas Williams of San Francisco and formerly a resident of this city, ix visiting friends here and will remain several weeks. B. T. All n, superintendent of the Gasworks, has been for three weekpast quite il with a stomach com plaint. He endeavored to sit up awhile ~ yesterday, but was so weak he svon bad to return to his bed. Superintendent Vincent of the Champion mine returned Saturday evening from San Francisco. He was accompanied on his return by Louix Bendel, a stockholder in the Cham pion Company, who will spend a few days here. Mr. and Mrs. 8. H. Dikeman and one of their sons, of Berkeley, are rusticatingat their ranch in Rough and Ready. The young man is ill, and they br ,ught him to the old home with the hope that the change of climate would benefit him, The Grass Val.ey Union of Sunday says: Wm. Coleman, of the firm ot Coleman & Glasson, left last evening for London, England. Mr. Coleman will probably make his future home in England. A NOVEL SUIT. Judge Stidger Wants. District Attorney Long Removed From Office. 3 Was their duty to appoint him, and it ‘is then claimed that Long attempted in favor of the Supervisors. No 16. Last July Justice Wadsworth was engazed in trying Frank Vaughn for disturbing the Salvation Army. Tho complaint claims that Mr. Long acted in such an unruly way that the Justice had to fine him $10 on three separate occasions, Long dared the Justice to collect the fines. He has the money with which to pay them but refuses, although it’ is made his duty by law to collect all fines, No. 17. The Grand J ury met on Sept. 20th and enquired into sévera; criminal charges. It in claimed that Judge Stidger who has so long threatened to make it “hot” for some of the county: officials, yesterday put his threats into execution by filing a complaint against District Attorney W. D. Long, which will have the effect, if he is sustained by Judge Walling, of putting Mr. Long out of office. he filing of the complaint startled those around the Court House, and Created a genuine sensation. It isa voluminous document, comprising forty pages of lezal cap, and was prepared by Thos, 8. Ford, whois acting as Ju lge stidzer’s attorney in the matter. The case is b; ought under an aci ol the Lezisl ture passed in 1874, and is the first action ofsthe kind which was ever tried in the State, so fur us has been learned. Scme new anc novel questions of law will therefore be presented for Judge Walling to pass upon. He issued a citation command ing Mr. Long to eppear and answer the charges on the 20th inst.nt. A decree is sought for depriving the District Attorney of his-offi-e for officia misconduct‘and negl-ct of duty. There are seventeen d fferent specifications or charges which we boil down fo: the purpose of giving the main points tu the public. Ist. ‘The first’ specification alleges that on the 3d of January last Mr Long presented a claiin to the Supervisors for allowance for $12 claime: for his meals and traveling expensex un d it is ¢laimed that the bill. was illezal and fraudulent, because the lawallowed Mr. Long nothing but his satary, und he knew-what the law was The bill was allowed and paid to Mr. Long. No. 2. Is another count for $6.27 on another bill-allowed about the sume time for like services. No. 3. Isa like bill for $16,70 presented under simila: ci cumstances, No’ 4. Is a similar bill presentea for $25.25 for “board, lodging and traveling expenses,” in the language of the complaint. No 5. Claims that lagt May Johr Eagan obtained the sun of $10 from a person in this city by false pretenses, and the injured party calledon: District Attorney Long to investigate the case, but he refused to listen to him at all. No. 6. Alleges that Oct. 3d Geo. Chappel committed thecrime of ma licious mischief, a misdemeanor, to the property of Owen Dougherty. The latter gentleman called on Mr. Lon 4s District A: torney, to investigate th charge, but he refused to listen to hin: orhave anything to do with the matter, although it was a genuine case and Dougherty had a right to a warrant. No. 7. .M. Nolan embezzled abon $200 worth of goods and money from L. Hyman last August. Mr. Hyman called on the District Attorney, but he refused to investigate the merits of the case or have anything todo with Hyman. The latter claimed that it was a Case that demanded public pros ecution. : No. 8. On September 24th, JameStephens of Bloomfield was brought before Judge Sowden on a charge o stealing a witch—petit larceny. The complaint claims that Steplens wa: mnocent and entitled to a trial within 4 reasonable time, but Long neglecteu the case and refused to investigate ite merits, so that the defendant was kept in jail nine dys through his neglec of duty, aided by Justice Sowden. No 9. Alleges that a man named Williams committed a burglary last year, and Sheriff Lord asked the District Attorney to attend to the case, but he positively refased. Lord had Williams arrested on his own responsibility afierwar s, and he pleaded zuilty. a ¥ No. 10. List’ June Zettie O’Neil was arrested for emb zzlement befor. Justice Wadsworth. When the pir. ties were brought into Court, Wadsworth sent an officer for Mr.-Long to vome and prosecute the case. Sunday morning at 2 o'clock Jimmy odda struch Samuel Simmons. on the vead with a champagne cider bottle. At this early hour, Rodda was in Simnons’s saluon. Simmons wished to ‘lose his place of business, and, previous to duing so, he treated those resent, as is customary with mos aloon-keepers. Rudda did not wish ogohome. While Simmons was in he act of closing the door, Rodda struck him a hard blow above the left eye, breaking the bottle in pieces, su Simmons says. A few weeks ago, at Clarks’ saloon, Rodda threw a beer schooner at Ned Gribbens, missing him, but shattering the gliss and leaving a large indenture in the wall. A broken Thigh. John Pengelly, the Columbia Hill ‘oarding-house. keeper, is in town. f'wo weeks ago one of his little boys struck the other acrogs the thigh. At first it was thought that no injuy was done. The boy complained so much that his father brough him to Nevada City and had Dr. Hunt examine him. The doctor found that the femur, or thigh-bone, was broken. “This was set und the boy will now recover from his injuries. Mr. Pengelly will stay 4 few days at the residence of Mrs. Long. ; Finger Amputated. Wm. Black, who ccidentally shot himself in the right hand while hunting a few weeks ayo, has found it necessury to have the second finger amputated at the knuckle joint. County Money from Fund to Fund. The Board of Supervisors at a meeting held on the third instant made an order to trinsfer from the General Fund of the county to the Generul Road Fund the sum of $3000 with which to pay for the new bridge across Greenhorn creek, the fill on the Columbia Hill and Cherokee road, ‘and other road work. County Auditor Beatty notified the Board that under his interpretation of the law the transfer could not be lega'ly made. The Board then conferred with D'strict Attorney Long who submitted ; written opinion holding that it could provided thut the record of the order was complete and set forth in detai. the circumstances requiring it. The Board then amended the or ler in compliance with the District Attorney’s suguestions, and served a copy of it upon Mr. Beatty. The latter responded with a written communication wherein he specifier in detail his reasons for still believin; it is not his duty tu make the transfer as directed in the amended order, Hi holds that the County Governmen: Bill limits to poll taxes and 40 cents 0: the handred dollurs of taxuble prop erty the amount that can be expended annu:lly on road work; that the law provides specificially how bridyer shall be paid for; and that subdivision 20 of section 25 of the County Gov ernment bill does not justify the trans fer of funds that would indirectly increase the amount allowed by law for ro.d purposes. A Reporter's Investment. Edward D. Dement, a reporter on the staff of the Daily Free Lance «her that paper was in existence at thi city, commenced suit ‘in the Superio) Court of gan Francisco a short time au against O. C. Tichenor to recover the sum of $1090. The defendant claimed a residence in Alame la county, and demanded a change of venue, whic! wae granted, and the papers in th: case wer* filed with the County Clert last Friday. The plaintiff alleges tha he paid the defendant $400 as par payment on.a one-thirtieth interest i: the latter s patents a:.d electric light-. Ten duys later he paid the bal ince. which was $600. He claims for thi amount that he was to réceive a shure of the profits made from the gale ot territorial rights, and~*hat out of th first proceeds to be derived he was: t receive the sum of $1000. He claim that the defendant has not kept hi. contract, but that hs has received some $16,000 from the sale of territorial rights since that time, but he ha never reimbursed the plaintiff the sun of $1000 as he azreed to do.
