TUESDAY, SEPT. 23, 1884.
Here is an extract from a speech
that Sumner made at Stockton on
thy 13th instant: ‘You have seen
fit to once more present my name as
a candidate at your ballot-box. I
admit that the situation is peculiar.
It is unusual for the people of a district to select a man fora candidate
who has resided within the boundaries of another district. But this is
your affair and not mine. No suggestion, no inuendo, no hiot ever
emenated from me asking for the
nomination. You saw fit to make
the nomination, and I thought it my
duty to leave the friends I was vis t~ ing in my ancestral hills and hasten
to recugnize the great honor you had
conferred upon me.” Even Sumner
himself cannot refrain from admitting that the situation isa most ‘‘peculiar” one, but he wants it distinotly understood that thegreat mistake
(hecalls it an ‘‘affair”) is not his, He
sees already that he is defeated, and
is beginning to trim his sails so that
the blame will fall on the Democratic bosses who put him up as a
dammy to be knocked down.
.>s+-Hon. Parri¢x Burns, of the
State of New York, is a widely
known advédiite of the labor . cause,
and in the Assembly of that State
has for many years been a leader
omong its leading chiefs. He recently addressed a letter to the
Democratic committee of Kings
county, and this is what he said:
“I cannot support Grover Cleveland
for any position in “the “gift of the
people. His recommendations and
vetoes since his inauguration as Governor of this State have not met
with the approval of the working
class, of which I claim to be a member. My opposition to Governor
Cleveland on the floor of the Assembly during the legislative session of
1883-4 leaves me no other course to
pursue. I cannot atultify my actions as a representative by supporting him for the Presidency now.”

# OF THE KIND NOW IN USE,
7 Adapted to all grades

This machine has been thoroughly tested for the past two yesrs: under a great variety

e
A recent competitive tests made with the Frue at the Carlisle mine, in New Mexico,
showed an advantage of 30 per cent. in favor of the Duncan. The amount saved over the
Frue being sufficient to pay the entire cost of the machines nearly every month of the
year.
@ The following is an‘enumeration of its many advantages over all other similar machines:
1. Its cost is not more than half that of any other of equal capacity, and the weight is
gra eee pouadg less, thus greatly reduciag the cost of transportation.
2. © expense of setting up in running order is not more than one-third that of the
Frue, or any other belt machine, much less grading and timber work being necessary.
3. The expenditure for repair is not more than one-fifth that ot any other belt machine,
and they will last fully three times as long, working under the same conditions. _
4. Not more than one-half the space is required—a point of great importance where a
considerable number are used.

wholly unfit for the rough service of a quartz mill,

similar machines many more, making a complication-of parts that involves constant repair and great expenses in this way, as wellas in loss of time.
We are aware that the most sweeping and pretentious claims are made for nearly every
