Amos Latnp.—The death of Amos Laird, well known to all old residents of this county as “Uthele Amos” is announced. Mr. Knowles, who was at Montana, informs us that Uncle Amos was, for several years, interested in a ‘valuable ditch property at Helena which he projected, and that the old man was worth money. kept his head . up and did not goafter the “tiger ; but about a year before his death he again. commenced gambling and rquandered all bis property. Uncle Amos was ey stirring man, always engaged in some important. project, and of all men was his own worst enemy. He was, while a resident of this county, engaged in a number of important mining and ditch enterprises. THE Crrcus.—Yesterday was a reg~ ular holiday occasion in town. The schvols were. dismissed, and early in the day people from the country began to come in to see the circus. The elephant, ihe ponies and wild animals were ~ generally discussed by the youngsters, who early began to accumulate on the the streets, At the time of the procession our streets presented a lively appearance, and the little ones and the big ones, too, stood with open mouths as they saw the grand band wagon, ghe trained horses, and the men with tin seled apparel passing by. The pertormances were largely attended.in the . afternoon and evening. THE EpiscopaL SoctaL.—The meets ing of the Social Circle, organized by the ladics of the Episcopal Church, was held at the residence of Dr. R. M. Hunt, on Wednesday evening, and attended by alarge number of friends. The pleasure was much enhanced by the excellent music by Marcus Blum and Ed. Muller, and after the usual business of patch making for quilts and needle work was completed, the guests enjoyed a pleasant, dance, the commodious dining hall and reception room being’ used for the purpose, and the calling was done by Mr, Millington. Those who did‘not dance enjoyed them= selves in social chat, and altogether the circle meeting was a very pleasant affair. 6 AN ELEPHANT ON THE SUSPENSION BripGe.—Yesterday morning the elephant Jenny Lind, belonging to CastelJos Circus, crossed the Suspension bridge . and its actions were as good as a circus, It got to the bridge, and on stepping into the carriagesway the vibrations made it hesitate. From that time until across the animal caretully felt his way, testing the strength of thé structure at every step, and stopping occasionally te stretch out its trunk, apparently to ascertain if the bridge was strong enongh to bear it. When the other end was reached the animal seemed relieved that it-had reached ground that was solid enough to bear it without shaking. On THE, RaMpaGe.—On Friday last; saysthe Truckee Tribune, a Frenchman, a passenger on tlie emigrant train going east, and who was a little the worse off from the too frequent use of Truckee whisky, was going along the track, and the switch engine Sam-~ son was about to run over him, when the engineer, Mr. Lampman, called to him to get out of the way. The Frenchman got greatly incénsed.at this and drawing a pistol was about to shoot at the engineer, who turned on the s@ipm and dodged down out of sight A switchman jumped off the engine and disarmed the _ fellow. Later in the: day he met a man down the track and drew a knifé upon him; but he was quickly disarmed. a ‘Wisconsin MINE.—The new mill ‘of this company says the~Grass Vailcy . Union is in a state of forwardness, and will be ready for crushing in about two weeks. The rock from the mine continues good, and the ledge shows an improvement in size and general appearance. When the rock can be milled upon the, ground, as it soon will be, it will. not take long for the Wisconsift: to be declaring dividends. 4 — First oF THE Sason.—Julius Dryfuss, on Pine street, is receiving fresh’ e oysters every day from the Bay, and will serve them to“€ustomers in any style. His place is fitted up for the ac~ commodation of ladies and gentlemen.
