NEVADA CITY, CAL.
LOCAL AFFAIRS..
_ (Caved On. :
On Tuesday last, as Mr. O’Hern
was working ib his tunnel at Carada
Hill, with his partner, dames Allén,
he encountered an old drift, and
in attempting to tunnel across it, the
“ground above taved on him, burying him almost completely up, leav‘ing scarcely breathing, room. His .
partner immediately procured asgistance, and the work of rescuing
the unfortunate man commenced,
‘It was about 2 o’clock in the afternoon when he was. caved on, and it
Avas 10 o'clock, at ‘night before he
‘was rescued, O’Hern was in a slightly stooping posture ; whenhe was
eaved on, and as fast ‘as his-com' yades would remove the earth, more
would fall déwn and take its place.
Although/not able to move his. bedy,
yet by constantly moving his hands
aud keeping the digs away from his
mouth, he was enabled to keep from
being suffoéated. When finally resened, he was nearly exhausted from.
“the continued pressure for eight
hours on his back, so much so, that
the pain was too great for, him to be
<arried home, and he was tuken to
. the house of his partner, Mr. Allen,
‘who lived-near the tunnel. We have
not learned whether O’Hern’s injuvies are likely to prove serious or not,

Freight.
An immense amount of freight is
arriving in this city, daily, frem Colfax. The merchants are new filling
up for the Fall trade. Several tons
-of feed, wheat, flour, etc., have al‘80 arrived during the past few days }
from the Wheatland mills.
— Gone Below, :
M. Hyman, of the firm of Hyman
Brothers, left-for San Francisco yes‘ terday to purchase a Fall stock of
«<lothing. Several cases of underwear, etc, have arrived, yet knowing
the wants of the gentlemen in this
city, Mr, M. Hyman hes gone below to select clothing’ for them persovally. In ‘a few days the largest
stock of clothing ever seen here will
be ‘received by this firm. They have
resolved to sell everything in their
line cheaper than any other house
in the State. Owing tothe tightness of the money market below,
they are confident of getting goods
‘lower than ever before, and will give.
their customers the benefit of their
bargains. oe

the ladies of this city ‘to call and examine the.goods, as they will now
