There is no doubt about their being
water enough, But there are several objections fo making this scheme
the sourceof supply for this city.
In the first place the main supply
reservoirs are located in so high a
region that ice and snow form on the
warfare to a thickness of 15 to 20 fect,
and the location is so remote that in.
the Winter season the works cannot
be reached. Inthe region of Fordyes Valley the snow falls to adepth
of 24to 30 feet. Below the niain
reservoir the snow fall ia also very
“heavy, and in the Winter season
whole sections of the flame are swept
away by snow slides and repairs are
impossible for weeks and months.

‘The first of the Trout Creek murder
cases is set for Monday the 25th inst.
Constable Cross has been summoning witnessee for the prosedation,
and Greeléy bas had his hands full
on the defence, about seventy-five
persons having been summoned so
far. J, O'Neil is the first oue to be
tried. The trial will probably occupy from 6 to 8 days, as there are a
long line of witnesses to be examined. Strennous effortg-were made
on the part of the defence to have
the trial come off at Truckee, but the
Judge would not allow it,. Most of
the witnesses will not go until taken
down on abench warrant, in which
case the county. will have to stand
tbe expenses. After seeuring the
jury the examination of witnesses
will. occupy 3 or 4 days, as there are
agreat many of them andthey will
be closely cross-questioned.
October Elections.
On the fOth day of October next,
‘being thé second Tuesday of the
month, State elections will be held
in Indiana, Ohio, Towa, Georgia and
West Virginia. Thé result of the
elections in Ohio -and Indiana is
looked ‘upon as important in its
beating apon the November election.
In 1872 Indiana gave Grant a ma
jority of 32,515, and Hendridks,
Democrat, for Governor, a majority
of; 1,148.»,Iu 1874 Neff, Demeorat,
for Seoretaty of State had a majorit y
of 17,252. Ohio will undoubtedly
go Republican, as the party there is
thoronghly organized and united.
Ohioin 1872 gave Grant a Majority of 37,531; in 1873 Allen, for Goyernor, had # mojority of 817; in 1874
State bud ‘a’ majority of 17,: 202, in
1875 Hayes, Republican, for Gover-.
nor had-a-majority of 5,544.

So few of the rich class attend the
Exhibition, and very few of the most
fayoréd cl asses of Philadelphia, are
Tepresented. On examination of the
hotel registers, it is shown that visitors from every State and Territory
are here. One of the hotels in elese
proximityto the grounds, comfortably. accommodated forty-two bundréd guests one night Jast week, at
very cheap rates: but many prefer,
and find it much more convenient
to’stay in the heart of the city, where
they can be provided for, even less
crowded and at less expense, at boarding houses. Many are induced to
go to. the hotel that I mention, be_
cause of the announcement of ‘its
terms, being one dollar per day; but
the accommodations do not ¢xce!
those of boarding houses;-and_ the
hotel is conducted on the Earopean
plan, meals being furnished ala carte,
and in'the end are mach more expensive than buarding by the day, as excellent board and quarters can be
readsly procured at $1 50 per day.
The side shows and temporary buildings iu thé vicinity of the Jate fire,
bave been condemned by the Grand
Jary, and the Mayor has ordered the
poliee to immediately remove all the
buildings that’ have ‘been erected
without authority. Many partes iad
leased ground for six months, for one
thousand dollars, and bas built booths
pat a trifling expense; but the patronage was very slender for the first four
months, aud now that business is
just beginuing to be brisk, and thére
is a prospect of theirinvestment paying it is all knocked in the head
by the fmperative order of the Mayor. The loss by the recent tire, footed ‘up, ath dunts to about one hundred
and forty-five thousand dollars.
Last Tuesday night at a: late hour,
the Mayor and his police foree, made
