. : (HE DAILY TRANSCRIPY. _ . NEVADA CITY, CAL. ~ BROWN & CALKINS, Prop'ru OWE, . 55-505 Business LEONARDS. CALKINS.....+-+Editor There are some, very, unpleasant rumors in circulation in regard to the mysterious disappearance of the man Harrison, of Colambia Hill. It s2ems to us thet some steps should be taken to sift the affair to the hottom, cost what it will. Harrison was last seen at Columbia Hill, and his suddden disappearance seems to {dicate that he has been murdered "and hisbod} thrown into’ shaft ‘or disposed of .it® some: other wayThere are all sorts of dark hiots think fora good detective to work on. If the rumors are. apfounded, ties whose names are so freely used in connection with the horrible deed. That a marder has been committed there seems to be reasonable doubt of in the minds of most of the : le residing in that section of our cist. The Officers claim they have nothing positive connecting any one with the deed, but yet they freely admit they have strong suspicions which would take time and money to work up, . ‘ If-a sharp detective should take hold of the case we feel quite positive the guilty parties would be brought to justice. No detective could afford to spend his time ~~ and money in unearthing the crime, without some guarantee of being recenpensed. We have faith, even if the matter 1s allowed to pass by for the time being, that the guilty parties will surely be discovered in the near future. We hope for the good name of Columbia Hill that if the citizens there believe the remains of Harrison have been buried in some 'particular place, they should take the matterinto their own hands and make a thorough invesiigation. . pd FRIGHTFUL STATISTICS. Iu an able paper read before tlie California State Medical Society at its last seasion, by Dr. E. T. Wilkias, there are some alarming statiswhole population; in 1870, 1 tu 489; 40UU, 1 to 2. In other words, should, hundred and eighteen years oaethird of the population would be insane. To carry the calculation a few decades more would make insanity the rule and sanity the exception. Then the sane, owing to their excepceptional peculiarities, would be confined and the insane would be at large. The same alarming increase of insanity seems to prevail in other parts of the civilized world. In some places the number of insane doubles every ten years. EEE CLAP-TRAP, For a number of years the _political parties had the ‘‘nagur” for its chief plank, and those who were thought to be the ‘‘soundest” in the proposition were sucvessful ou getting into office. After that issue was played out good fortune. favored them with the Chinamen, which the ‘politicians have been running for the “past ten years. After the celestial was disposed of they were in a great quandary what tointroduce into politics that would ‘tbamboozle” the voters. They at last hit upun the Railroads and that 1s the clap-trap plank for this campaign. We hope the time will come, but we have no faith that it ever will,. when men will be elected to office on their merits and nos through demagogish platforms. Twin Comets. Prof. K. E. Barnard, of Nashville, Tenn., on the 14th., discovered a new comet Iccated near the star Lambna, in the constellation of. the twins. His discovery was’ announced by telegraph to Mr. H. H. WarY., and almost at the same moment Pro’. Lewis Swift, Director of the Warner. Observatory, received intelligence that a large naked eye comet had been discovered in Rio Janeiro, South America. Prof, Bar_ nard is the first person the ‘present year to receive the Warner prize of $200. The fact that these two -comets came into view:the same“ time is exceedingly significant, ~~ “A cameron student of the politieal sstustion,” has furnished the fen arith Washington corresondent with an estimate of the 3 of representatives, . It es the Democrats a majority of ~~ thirty-three over all, The friends of _ Democratic candidates for speaker are also advised to begin pipe-laying . , to remember that membef of the ‘next house . the ‘thus far elected is Mr. George of . ? am, and he is a Bepublican. —~ then so much the better for the partics. In 1860 the namber of insane in California was 1 to 833 of the in 1880, 1 to 383. If the increase of the insane to the sane should continue in the future, as it has in the past twenty years, in the year 1900 there would be ong insane person to every 153; in 1920, 1 to 69;in 1949, 1 to 27; in 1980, 1 ta 12, and in the year the present alarming increase of insanity iu this State continu , in one * ner, at the Warner Observatory, N. } TRE LATEST NEWS. : Pd ‘ * Senator John F\Miller arrived st San Francigeo from Washington Wednesday, and Thursday evening tendere@'a grand reception by hia political friends. \ Wm.
