A dispute arose between Shuchet and. Picard in relation to an account of $14,which the former claimed to have against the latter. This resulted in the sending of a challenge which was accepted. ‘The, preliminaries were arranged, and the weapons chosen were Colt’s six-shooters. The principals and seconds repaired to the field, and the latter, desiring to prevent the effusion of blood, capped the weapons and loaded them ‘The prinei-. pals were stationed and the fight commenced, but the principals discovered the trick of the seconds; and as their wrongs . were too deep to be healed by the snapping of acap, they determined to fight: “without seconds. The pistols ware loaded for “deadly work” and the parties repajred to the field alone, determined each to _ live. or die in defenge of liis honor, as fate ~ decreed.
