If-this is what General Ewing calls good condact, save the nation from such teachers as he proves himself to bé. It would be interesting to know by what logic Deu‘ocrats make Ewing a great General aad at the same time hold that Grant is no General at all: But Ewing has made a Democratic speech in which he says: “The whole people of the South bewed to the aathority of the nation; with hearts in which, ae they are human, there were yet doubtless revenges and ‘gorrows, . ments,;and undy aa od rth the . attachments to the . diise they had eee loved and bravely ponte Boe but “which yielded imgly al sh the people, the Presint, or the war party had ever told them were the purposes of the war.” They yielded itis true, aad were well satisfied to. accept such conditions as the: nation would give them. Encouraged by Northern men who had aided then: on every occasion during the ‘rebellion, the leaders ‘ofthe South began to hope that the objects for which they fought might yet be attained, The Ku-Klux-Klan. was organized, and a system of persecution inaugurated that resulted in. the New Orleans massacre; that forced such men ‘as Hamilton of Texas, Botts of Virginia and thousands of other loyal men of the South to flee from their homes and their native hearthatones for protection against the midnight assassin. The people of the South then submitted so gracefully that nearly, 900 men have been murdered in Texas, as shown by the Legislative report, for no other reason than that they refused to join the rebel leaders for the purpose of regaining the lost cause. Governor Brown of Georgia; for no other reason than that he advocates the election of Urant and Colfax; is’ denounéed by Howell Cobb as unworthy to live among this people, and Wade Hampton desires to cast ont from society all such men as Governor Brown, Men who are guilty of going, to political meetings are shot down because they are opposed to regaining the lost cause and prefer Grant and Colfax to Seymour and Blair. Albert Pike advises Southeyn people to kill every Yankee who attempts to settle in the South, and yet General Ewing tells his audienes that this is good ‘conduct and that geot order prevails. Good order did prevail in ‘the ‘South itmediately after the close of the war,and good govetnment would have by this time been oniaere had ttnot been for the Demaa leaders of the South wal a government and théy believe that the election of Seymour -and Blair will give‘ them one. Wath all deference to the learning of these gentlemen, we conterid that moisture is one ofthe indispensable elemenw of fog, and that fog is only air chilled and its vapors condensed into mist. A fog without moisture would be like Hamlet with the Prince left out. The learned gentlemen must find some other theory. How do they like ours: That the tail of a comet has recently: passed across the earth. Several astfonomers have asserted that the earth has in times-past-been enveloped by the tails ‘of these erratic heavenly . bodies, and the’ evidence which they cite is phenomena similar to that. recently. witnessed: all along this coast;-< Fer-instance:In-1783,-on the 18th of Jane, a similar phenomenon occurred, and continued for a month, prevailing along the coast of the Atlantic, from Africa to . Sweden and throughout North and South America. It-couldbe--ebserved ‘on the: highest some places it-came on_with the wind in -one-direction, and at other places With a-contraty wind. The “fog” had an unpleasant odor—was destitute of moisture entirely. In both particulars it resembled eur recent “fog.” Another similar occurrence took place in 1881. These phenomena were laid to volcanic eruptions, and an immense fire-ball which penetrated the atmosphere only partially ignited, which threw off clouds of smoke. Smith, in his astronomy, after noticing these theories as unsatisfactory ‘says: “We will concede that it isa fact that these fogs were produced by comets, until we have a better explanation of their origin.” We will not give up our comet theory until the savants of San Franeisco can give us a more reasonable explanation than that the recent phenomenon was “fog destitute of moisture.” Boards of Registration should remember that the fact thata man is on the Great Register is not. evidence of his right tovote. The law. provides that every inhabitant of a county who is or may be within siz months a qualified elector and legal voter, shall be enrolled. on the Register who are nbt entitied to vote at this election, and therefore have no right to be on the Poll List. The officers of Registration are qualified to take proof in all cases where parties apply. To vote,a man must be in the State six months. prior to election, counting from the time he arrives, and not from the time he left some other State. Let enrolling officers remember that enrollment tipon the Great -Register is not evidence of the right to vote. From the way in which they handle figgers, one would judge they are wax, to be moulded in any shape, and as for the nigger, its their only “figger of speech,” and s0-potent is it that Democratic speakers.now carry nigger doll babies in their peed aera, at Nevada. IMPORTANT Dacraron>—The Supreme Court of Nevada lias rendered a decision sustaining the provision disfranchising those who have borne arms against the nation.
