Why a Copperhead should go and

that there is no demoralization or

Ex-Congressman T. G. Phelps
wrote a note Sept, 20th to ex-Gov.
Stanford, asking how he stood politically, not for Pbelp’s information,
bat because he had often been asked
the question, and on the same day
Gov. Stanford answered, saying:
**I pave the honor to acknowledge
the receipt of your note of this date,

in the pending Presidential canvass.
I am happy to reply that lam, as I
always have been since the organiza-tion of the Republican party, in complete sytapathy with its principles,
and shall, though retired from active
participation in political affairs, give
an earnest support to the nominees
of the Cincinnati Convention.”
Brick Pomeroy, the apostle of
modern Democracy, is credited with
the following: “‘We said in 1864,
that Democrats could not elect a war
man on a peace platform. They did
net. We said in 1868 that Democrats could not elect an Eastern man
on a Western platform, or a split
candidate ‘against an honest sentiment. They did not. We said in
1872 that the Democrats could not
elect Horace Greeley on a liberal
platform, and they didn’t. We said
Lin 1870 we would edit a paper in New
York till Tweed wasin jail. Wedid.
We stated two years ‘ago that Tilden
would never be President of the Uuited States, and he never will.”’
The Charleston, S.C. News, says:
A litde duck, while swimming m a
pond near the Savannab and Charleston railroad depot a day or two ago,
was caught by the foot by an oyster,
and,as the tide was coming up, would
have been drowned had not its cries
attracted the attention of a workman
who released it from.its uncomfortuble position, 4
