The Oakland Times for some, time
\ before 'the Convention, was not favorable to Mr. Page's re-nomination,
having s particular favorite of ite
own ia view, in all probability; but
after he was re-nominated it came to
the im the fol'owing compliDuring the last session of Congress,
Mr. Page became so prominent, snd
before the pablic, that he compelled
the respect of those who, on previous
occasions, bad favored other persons
for the positions he held. A public;
servant should be judged by his
works, and the people rarely fail to
ability. He has always beep a successfgh mad in attending to the interests of his district, but this. year he
became peculiarily the champion of
the whole people fora constitaency.
His te-nomination was a foregone
evunclusion and that it was made by
acclamation will nct cause surprise.
He will carry thisdistrict by a larger
majority than he has ever before received, and add very materially to
the strength of the ticket. The
Democrats had not the slightest hopes
of elécting their mas, and instead of
patting forward one of their veterens, as when sure of the place, they
took up a young man who will probably be satisfied with the empty
honor of a nomination as the means
of bringing him before the public,
Mr. Pagevhag bad-to work very
earnest:y and very hard to secure
the political honors whizh just, now
appear to come so easily. He has
bad some very heavy obstacles to
overcome, and has made many narrow escapes. He iga man who can
learn rapidly, anid he is now one of
the most. ivflaential members of the
House of Representatives. H's ten
years expetience at the Nationa!

Betrott Ignorance.
The proprietor “of a Woodward
avenue store, which had beeu finely
decorated in honor of the Knight of
Pythies convention, was at his door
yesterday, when an old man lounged
up and began:
‘Such ignorance I never saw in
ell my life! You see that man there
-=the one with the white hat ou !”
Yes.”
Well, he,wae baviny a good deal
to say, and I asked him who Pythias
was!, Would you believe it, he
couldan’t answer me?”
**C-couldn’t he?” stammered the
citizen,
“No, sir, he couldn't.
such ignorance in -this htened .
age! When I told hin who Pythias
was he called mea liar. Now, I want
to prove that I’m right. You come
over and tell him all about it.”
“But I—I can’t leave:”’

‘No, you needn’t—I’m busy.”
“I see you are, but when a min

I ain’t, ry have bia . over in " minute.”
He hadn’t crossed the street before the merchant slid into the store
and hurried up stairs to keep out of
sight for an hour, and it, was only
after he wae certain that theold man
had ‘departed that hé slipped. down
and consulted Webster's dictidnary
tofind out whether Pythias was a
town, a man, or a temple on a hill. . e
JoxerH Scorr, a Sacramento,
policeman, was murdered December

remained a mystery had not a prisouer at San Quentin, iva fit of passion,

Groroe Francis Trary,

The iron Works at Hotaling.
From the San Francisco Chronicle we learn that the report of the
destruction of the Clipper Gap Iron
Works proves to be exaggerated,
The loss comprises the destruc ion
and
$15,000, or $42,000 in all. It ie expected that the furnace will be in
blast again in five or six weeks
by which time 200,000 bushels of
charcoal will have been accumulated,
which will carry the works through
the winter, The buildings in which
the charcoal was stored were formerly of wood. They will hereafter be largely of iron, and four in
number. This arrangement is expected to insure the safety of ‘the
charcoal. The furnaces have been
rupping since July and have been
earning $3,000 per month. All the
iron is sold at the works, ‘where it
brings a larger price than Salsbury
iron brings in San Francisco. ‘The
Ceutral Pacific Rai'road is one of the
largest consumers, using it at the
railroad shops at Sacramento for car
wheels, trucks, ete, The amouat of
