The Copperheads have'nt any great grounds fur hope, even in Grase Valley. ; i Tae Correrneap MeetiNG.—On last Baturday night the “ Copperbeads held a meeting at-Temperance Hall in this city.— After driving around. Grass Valley for an hour with a stage and omnibus. they managed to fill the stage, but the othet vehicle ‘had to be taken back tu the stable. At the meeting tLere were about thirty fron: Grass Valley, and representatives from Moore's Plat; Buen Vista, Rock Creek, and all the Camps around this city. Quite a number of Tovien men were alee in attendance. All told, the audience was less than 150 persone, Weludiag boys. Speeches were made by Dibble, Taylor and Waters. The speakers followed the usual coarse of Copperhead etampers. Y i Tax CoLLecrox Ropsep—On last Sevarday night, as Sol. Crowa, Deputy Tax Collector for T°T Davenport, was returning te Grass Valley after hie day's work, and when about ove and a half miles from that town, on the old Auburn road, two men a proached himanddemanded his money.— Both parties wete masked aud one had a pistol leveled atthe Collector. Crown beas itated about giving up bis money, when a blow from some hard substance laid him out. The fellow that knoc then ‘went through him,” while the fellow who had the pistol destroyed all iaclination to resist by rubbing the muzzle of tho weapon under his chin. They got $90 in coin. Sol. Crown had at the time an order on A Delano tor $160 in bis vest ket which the robbers did nut find.— robbers tore Crown's receipt books to pieces, saying that “ne d——__4 Abolition tax should go through that country.” George Pieree, of this city, and another horseman, came up the road soon after the highwaymen finished their business with Crown, and the ,thieves fled. We are ins formed that Grass Valley is infested with a number of Knights of the road, and it is bt that a brisk business will be transby them this season. —_— oe. Union. Meeting at Rev Doe. —Hons. .
