The flicans made ne effort to get out @ very -largecrowd, and there was no intention on the part of Nevadans to, go down until Thursday morning, but _ till Nevada sent down a full delegation and both parties were well represented. In; Wallate most persons were ~~diseppointed: He was ‘spoken of as . _One of the big Democratic guns, and in common, with all Democrats has a title. He must bea big Democrat, for they call: him! General. He presented the nigger to hig ,andienceim sixteen or eighteen different positions and then ha pein des talents were 80. much ex‘that he had bat little of either issues of the present.canvass. In all his retorical flourishes. and grand cli=e __ mixes, the’ was his “central fig_ger,” and-he flourished the lash of negro “equality over the heads of his audience in the hopes of whipping his Democratic followers into the traces. He is certainly complimentary to his Democratic friends when he labors, for two hours to prove that the negro will be equal to. them ifhe has a chance. Why don’t the gentleman go a little further aind argué that a jackass would be as good as a Democrat if he could only vote, “He would be just as complimen. tary to his partisans. . Gorham, though he has not had much experience in debate has too much caliber for his opponént., So far as an intelligent discussion of the real issues of the contest and a clear and. concise defence of the reconstrugtion policy.and the tenets of the Republican party. are concerned,."he is thoroughly posted, and preseatg his arguments: in .clear and foreible language. In the concluding part of the debate he showed him. self ready and apt in answering the questions of his opponent and much to the delight. of the Union men present: We are inclined to think the meeting at Grass Valley did much good as the principles of the two parties were discussed from the same stand ‘afd the people were enabled to contrast them, The Union men who attended are confident that Gorham had the best of it. and as some Democrats admit that Wallace’s speech ‘was unsatisfactory we conclude that they at least think their man came out second best. : _ WHEN Pendleton was about midway in his. Augusta, Me. harangue, a stranger, with a countenance expressing genuine disgust, accosted a well known Republican, and inquired the way to a neighboring town. The desired infor. mation was given, when the stranger added, by way of adieu : “I have always been a Demograt, but this speech has cured me. I believe I’d better mind my: business instead of listening to that critter any longer.” Pee In Cincinnati the Republicans have formed a Grant and Colfax cavalry battalion. ‘The uniform consists of cavalry jackets, ted caps, with white top and » i red, blue. ee ceived, inclosing a-slip from the Capital ‘. -that I have spoken in twelve out of the ‘ . deprive mé of the.opportunity to visit { questions involved in any election, and PS We find the following in the SacraBenge Union, of a y capt cam A. a oBA H, GRE . San, Francisco, Sept. 25, 1868: FLAG PreseNnTaTion.—The Nevada Tanners yesterday received a beautiful flag from .W. By, Lake, Eeq,, of San Francisco as a present. Mr. Lake recently visited this city-and was present at the first drill of the Tanners. The following correspondence explains it” SAN FRANctsco, Sept. 24, 1868, Major Deal, Commanding Tanners:— Allow me to present, through you, to af eurnest Wish for your success; and the triumph of the great Union party in November next. ; May this emblem of Freedom wave over nine hundred good and true Tanners of Nevada City; —— — ~_ Yours ‘Fruly ~°Ww. B: Laxr. To Major M.$. Deal. —Headquarters Nevada Battalion of Tanners. NgvaDA Crry, Sept. 26, 1868. Wm._B. Lake, Esq., Dear Sir :—On behalt of the Tanners of Nevada, allow me to return you our hearty—thankis for the handsome flag, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged. Rest assured, dear sir, that our hearts . and hopes are in this. contest, and that never be dishonored by the triamph of Democratic iniquity if the Tanners’ can prevent it. By the blood of thousands the old flag has been baptised and came out of the fight triumphant in ita glory. It is for. the people to perpetuate its grandeur by the election ot Grant and Colfax in this coutest. We, the Tanners of Nevada City will do our part, and the emblem of national unity which you have given us shall be carried in triumph to victory. I remain with great respect, yours in the good cause, M. 8. Dea, Major Commanding Nevada Battalion of Tanners, To W. B, Lake, San Francisco, contest. Never were such momentous no man who loves his country should de deterred from giving his aid to the right at this time, It is the duty of every Union man to see not vnly that he is enrolled, but that all other loyal men within his reach are placed upon the poll list before the 4th of October. Many of our best citizens are too apt to neglect these important matters until a late day. Vow is the time to-enroll, and no man should delay a single hour until satisfied that his name is upon the poll list, United efforts will give us a glorious victory in Calitornia, and every inan should do his duty. Stand by the fing, boys, in this contest, and the glorious old banner, baptized in the best blood of the nation, will be unfurled as the banner of peace in. the ides of Novemthe meeting was. to take. place some. . the ‘fanners: of Nevada, the aecourpa= . < the glorious Stars and Stripes shall . STAND BY THE FLAG, Bors.—Every man owes a duty to hia country in this } A “PEACEFUL” Revo.vutiox. — It ir _. Northern Democratg to choke off hanest friends in th@South. They will + . keep “talking right out. in mecting.” . Albert Pike, the leader of Indian troops, { who were wont to scalp the Federal ‘dead during the war, supports Seymour and Blairon the southern interpretation of the platform—that jis, as they were giyen to understand it, at the national convention, by the Northern leaders and the nomination of Bjair oh his revolutionary letter. Pike recently, in a speech at Centre Hill, Mississippi, urged the young men of that State to solemnly swear t6 kill any Northertieé “wlio should attempt to cross the Ohio river for the purpose of settling in the South ; and, in the Memphis Appeal of the 30th ultimo, he exhorts them thus . Go on, boys ; swear to murder Northern Huns!“ Armi yourselves and organize, and be ready to respond promedy when called on, and fight ravely, even if you get: killed. If these old rebel leaders do not speak for the Democratic party, whom do they and they go with the only party which proposes to give it tothem; and they show us pretty clearly what is uriderstood by carrying on a revolution in the South by “peacefal means.” When Gorham and Wallace discussed at Stockton, the Democrats required the Union men to stipulate that the band engaged by the two parties should not. play “Marching through Georgia,” “John Brown,” or “The Union Right or Wrong.” They also stipulated that . Gorham and Wallace should not stop at . . the same hotel, and were no doubt much chagrined when they heard that Wallace accepted ap invitation to ogeupy a berth in Gorham’s state-room, on A San Francisco Uniop man recently
