We remember when exSuperintendent Jobn Swett was in office, that professional pri@e among teachers was encouraged by him, ‘and the teachers of the State all bad wn advocete in him, and there was a feeling ebroad that -teashing was a ‘profession. There ‘was'a constant demand then for thoroughly edueated aad well trained teachers. The inquiry was not so much as to whether the applicant was about his qualifications—his ability to teach—andthe experience he possessed. That feeling has’ gradually died out since ther. Trustoes are looking for. teachers with ‘us most is, teachers are helping them along. ° Itis a fact that ‘some senseless questions have been propounded by the State Board of Examination in past years, but a majority of the papers issued from that body have been fair. It.is. also trae, that if there was any unfairness on the part of the Board, there has been certificates to teach. During the past two or more years, the printed questions have been obtained by some means, aud many applicants obtained them in advance of examimations, The present Board concluded to break the evil up, and with that view have had the questions printed at different offices, and ‘Oaly.a short time previous to each examination, This did bresk up the evil, but it makes those. squirm who are affected by it, and that was what they were Going when they went after the State Board so lively at San Francisco. We hope the same course will be pursued, howevervand that the present howl will not deter the Board from performing their fnll duty. We believe they now propose to print some simple questions each time, for third grade applicants, and have them #0 easy that almost any school girl can obtain acertificate. This is what the But thé Board will still require evidence of ‘fove @ person can receive a second or first grade certificate. We think the ideaagood one. Let the children have a certificate if every one de-’ mands it, but don’t pretend to certi-. fy that those who hold second and firet grade certificates are teachers, until they have proven their fitness by passing a satisfactory and thorough examination. > Beoth at Sacramente. The people of Sacramento arenmkiog arrangements to induce the California Theatre management to bring Booth, andthe whole stock company to the Capital, to play for a couple of nights. Wedo not know whether they have succeeded in raising the amount necessary or uot. If not, We oan assure the managers of the enterprise, that there will be no diffioulty 1m getting w large number from outside points to attend. We think there would be at least twenty-five if not double the number, frour this place, who would be glad to go, and we presume other points between here and Sadramenté would furnish an equal if not greaternumber, The if the thing is once. advertised to SP Yar Turks are concentrating in laige numbers on the Drina, /to the Eastern States and, the Cencording to a New York Tribune not rely entirely upon‘natural advantages tg make it attractive. We believe it is the best governed and best kept city inthe State. The public buildings, parks and private residences are ueatly kept, the streets are well watered, and nearly every public or private yard is a flower garden. Long lines of shade trees in every part of the city show where the streets run, and on many of them we -ucticed while there ‘substantial improvements going op. We-know that Sacramentans are proud of, their city, and we do not blame them for it. It is a beautifal place, but in our opinion rather inclined to be-a dull one. ~~ a State Superintendent, State Supérintendent Carr, we understand, will devote considerable time hereafter in lecturing to the people of the State. Mrs, Carr, his deputy, has jast returned from a visit tennial, and will be able to assume some of his office duties so as to enable him-tespare the time. We hope the Dr. can make it in his way to deliver a lecture or two inthis county. His talks on educational subjects are always able, and can not be listened towithout interest and profit.
